Look, I realize that calling something 'wild-harvested blue-green algae from a pristine Oregon lake' sounds like a selling point, but let me tell you what else is wild-harvested from that same lake: bacteria that produce liver toxins. And according to a 2025 study that actually tested commercial AFA blue green algae supplement products, those toxins are showing up in the jar you just paid forty-five dollars for, right next to the words 'pure' and 'natural' and a picture of a mountain that has nothing to do with anything.
The algae in question is Aphanizomenon flos-aquae, which everyone calls AFA because nobody wants to say that name twice in one conversation or ever. It grows in Upper Klamath Lake in southern Oregon, where it blooms every summer in concentrations thick enough to turn the water the color of a gas station sports drink. Companies harvest it, dry it, powder it, and sell it to you as a stem cell renewal supplement with a price tag that suggests it was blessed by a monk and then blessed again by a more expensive monk.
The pitch is always the same: this stuff is pure, it is ancient, it is what your ancestors would have eaten if your ancestors had lived near a hypereutrophic alkaline lake and owned a dehydrator and had no survival instincts whatsoever. The marketing loves words like 'primordial' and 'nutrient-dense' and 'wild-crafted', which all mean the same thing: we scooped it out of the water and put it in a bag. That is it. That is the whole process.
What The Lab Found In Your AFA Blue Green Algae Supplement
A 2025 study published in Foods applied high-resolution mass spectrometry to commercial spirulina- and klamath-based food supplements, screening for cyclic peptide cyanotoxins. They were not looking for contamination as a possibility. They were looking for contamination as an assumption, because when you harvest cyanobacteria from open water, you also harvest whatever else was living in that water at the time, and some of that whatever else wants to kill you.
What they found: multiple cyanotoxins in klamath-based products, including high concentrations of microcystin-RR. They also identified additional variants through suspect screening, meaning there were toxins present that they were not even testing for initially, which is the research equivalent of checking your basement for rats and finding a whole second basement you did not know about.
Microcystins are hepatotoxins. That is the science word. The regular word is: they damage your liver. They are produced by cyanobacteria that coexist with AFA in the lake, and when you harvest one, you get the other. It is like ordering a salad and finding out the kitchen also gave you a side of pesticide because it was on the lettuce and nobody washed it off and also they charged you extra for it.

Now, I am aware that I am yelling about algae, and I am aware that algae cannot hear me, but this is not a theoretical problem. The study noted that several toxins were detected at levels that raise genuine consumer safety concerns, and called for routine monitoring and stricter regulatory oversight. That is scientist-speak for: we tested what people are actually selling and we did not like what we found and we are using formal language because if we said what we actually thought, the journal would not print it.
The Microcystin-Free Problem Nobody Is Solving
If you go looking for microcystin free blue green algae, you will find plenty of labels that say 'tested for purity' or 'organic certified' or 'sustainably harvested'. What you will not find, most of the time, is an actual lab report that names microcystin-RR and shows you the number next to it, because that would require the company to admit they tested for poison and then tell you whether they found any.
Organic certification means the lake was not treated with synthetic chemicals. It does not mean the bacteria in the lake were polite. Sustainably harvested means they left some algae behind for next year. It does not mean they filtered out the toxins. And 'tested for purity' could mean anything from rigorous third-party screening to somebody looking at it under a lamp and saying yeah, that looks like algae, ship it.
A 2024 study in FEMS Microbiology Ecology tracked AFA blooms and collapse in Upper Klamath Lake, documenting how microbial community structure shifts during bloom periods. The research found that AFA does not grow alone: it grows alongside Candidatus Sericytochromatia, Flavobacterium, Rheinheimera, and a rotating cast of other microbes, some of which are known AFA antagonists and some of which produce the very toxins you are trying to avoid. The whole ecosystem is in there when they harvest it. It is not algae farming. It is lake scooping.
So when a company selling aphanizomenon flos-aquae supplement tells you it is pure, what they mean is: it is purely what came out of the lake. And what came out of the lake is not just algae. It is algae plus bacteria plus whatever those bacteria were making that week, and none of that is on the label because the label does not have room for a full cast list.
The One Study That Actually Measured Something Interesting
Okay, so the toxin situation is bleak, but is there any actual evidence that AFA does anything worth the risk? One study, published in early 2025 in Clinical Epigenetics, found that AFA extract modulated DNA methylation in human intestinal cells. Specifically, researchers observed changes in the methylation status of genes encoding pro-inflammatory interleukins, which are signaling molecules involved in immune response, and if you understood that sentence on the first read you are doing better than I did.
This is the first evidence of an epigenetic mechanism for AFA in human cells, and it is genuinely interesting. DNA methylation is a regulatory process that affects gene expression without changing the underlying DNA sequence, and the fact that a microalgae extract can influence it in inflammation-related pathways is worth further study. I mean that. This is real.
But here is what that study did not do: it did not give anyone an organic AFA algae powder and measure their inflammatory markers twelve weeks later. It tested an extract on isolated intestinal cells under controlled lab conditions, which is like proving that gasoline burns in a test tube and then telling people to drink it because it might keep them warm. The researchers themselves noted that the precise mechanisms of action remain underexplored and warrant further investigation, which is the kindest possible way of saying we found one thing and we do not know what it means yet.
So yes, there is one real finding here. No, it does not establish that the powder in your cabinet is doing anything for your stem cells, your inflammation, or your renewal signaling, whatever the hell that is supposed to mean.
If You Are Going To Buy It Anyway
I know somebody reading this is going to buy it anyway, because the internet told them it worked or because they already bought a six-month supply and they are not wasting it or because a guy at the gym swears by it and that guy has very good skin for reasons that definitely have nothing to do with being twenty-six. Fine. But if you are going to do this, at least make the company prove the product is clean.
Ask for third-party testing that specifically screens for microcystins by name. Not a certificate of analysis that lists 'heavy metals' and 'microbial contamination' in vague terms like a restaurant menu describing the fish. Not a stamp from an organic certifier. A lab report with 'microcystin-RR' written on it and a number next to it, ideally a number that is zero or close to it, from a lab that does not share office space with the company selling you the algae.
If the company cannot produce that, or if they tell you their process is proprietary, or if they say the lake is so pure it does not need testing, then you are buying pond water from someone who thinks you will not ask questions. And a 2025 study already proved that some of those products contain liver toxins at levels that made researchers write the words 'consumer safety' in italics, and researchers do not use italics lightly. Those people use italics the way normal people use sirens.
The whole supplement is sold on the idea that it is natural and untouched and straight from the source, and that is true. The problem is that the source is a lake full of bacteria, some of which make poison, and 'wild-harvested' does not mean 'safe'. It just means somebody scooped it up and put it in a bag and charged you forty-five dollars for the privilege of eating something that used to be at the bottom of a lake.
