Anandamide Sleep Supplement Timing: Your Body Makes It at 10 PM

Your body makes anandamide around ten PM. Then you look at your phone and the whole system shuts down. That is not a metaphor. That is what the endocannabinoid system does when you give it blue light at bedtime.

Anandamide is an endocannabinoid. It binds to the same receptors as THC, but your brain synthesises it on demand in response to increased calcium or activation of certain G-protein coupled receptors. Researchers call it the bliss molecule. I call it the molecule that knows what time it is and you do not.

In a 2026 review published in Translational Psychiatry, researchers summarised what happens when anandamide signalling works correctly. It gets made. It does its job. Then an enzyme called fatty acid amide hydrolase, FAAH, degrades it within minutes. The system is supposed to be transient and tightly regulated. That is the design.

The timing is not random.

The Endocannabinoid System Sleep Schedule Nobody Follows

Anandamide levels rise at sleep onset. Not during the day. Not when you are trying to concentrate or lift something heavy or have a difficult conversation. At sleep onset. A 2026 review in Neurotherapeutics noted that the endocannabinoid system modulates circadian rhythms, and that two sleep-related pathways, circadian regulation and glymphatic clearance, are both influenced by endocannabinoid tone.

Glymphatic clearance is the brain's waste removal system. It runs at night. It needs you horizontal and unconscious. Anandamide appears to help signal that the cleaning crew can start.

Blue light from screens suppresses this entire process. A 2026 review in Molecules described how repeated exposure to sleep disruption shifts adaptive signalling toward maladaptation. Evening screen use is repeated exposure. The study did not say how long it takes to wreck your endocannabinoid tone. It did say the damage is cumulative.

So someone thought: what if we just stop the enzyme that breaks anandamide down?

FAAH Inhibitors, Or How To Keep Anandamide Around Longer

FAAH is the main enzyme that degrades anandamide. Inhibit FAAH and anandamide levels go up. In theory this delivers more physiologically constrained CB1 receptor engagement than just taking THC. In practice it delivered two Phase II trials and modest results.

The 2026 Translational Psychiatry review tracked the clinical evidence. Two compounds, PF-04457845 and JNJ-42165279, progressed to human trials. They worked for cannabis use disorder. They did not work for PTSD. They did not work for osteoarthritis pain. The trials measured craving, measured trauma symptoms, measured joint inflammation. They did not measure sleep.

Nobody asked if blocking FAAH at night would let people fall asleep faster or stay asleep longer. That was not the endpoint. The endpoint was psychiatric symptom reduction, and the results were modest.

FAAH inhibitors also raise levels of two related compounds, oleoylethanolamide and palmitoylethanolamide, which have anti-inflammatory effects but no direct role in sleep. So you get three molecules going up when you only wanted one. That is not necessarily bad. It is just not targeted.

What Blue Light Actually Does To Your Endocannabinoid Tone

The Molecules review described circadian disruption as a form of chronic cellular stress. The body has systems that normally preserve homeostasis: redox regulation, mitochondrial quality control, autophagy, DNA repair. Sustained sleep disruption degrades all of them. The hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis stays activated. Nocturnal regenerative pathways, including glymphatic clearance, do not run.

Anandamide is part of that nocturnal machinery. It does not work alone. It works with cortisol rhythms, melatonin, adenosine, about forty other things. Blocking one enzyme is not the same as fixing a broken schedule.

A 2025 review in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences proposed that the endocannabinoid system, the microbiome, and the neuroimmune system form a unified feedback network. They called it the Endocannabinoid-Microbiota-Neuroimmune Super-System. The idea is that health is not a property of single molecules but the emergent property of interdependent loops. Stabilising negative feedback keeps you functional. Runaway positive feedback is how chronic disease starts.

You cannot supplement your way out of runaway feedback if you are still doing the thing that broke the loop.

Best Supplements For Endocannabinoid System Support, Or Just Turn The Lights Off

There are no retail anandamide supplements approved for sleep. FAAH inhibitors are investigational drugs, not supplements. If you search for how to boost anandamide naturally for better sleep, you will find omega-3 fatty acids, which provide the substrate your body uses to make endocannabinoids, and CBD, which weakly inhibits FAAH and might raise anandamide levels by a small amount in some people.

The 2026 Neurotherapeutics review noted that non-canonical pathways, including TRPV1 and D2 dopamine receptors, also modulate endocannabinoid signalling. So the system is complicated and nobody has a clean way to target just the sleep piece yet.

What researchers do know is that blue light blocking and sleep hygiene work. They measured it. The Molecules review listed sleep optimisation, stress reduction and metabolic regulation as mechanistically grounded strategies for prevention. Not supplement strategies. Behaviour strategies.

Anandamide peaks at ten PM. That is when your body wants the lights off. If you give it blue light instead, it will stop making the molecule that says it is bedtime. Then you will lie there wondering why you cannot sleep. That is not a disorder. That is cause and effect.
