Bilberry Took Credit for Winning the Night. Radar Did That.

Bilberry is a blueberry that skipped dessert and went to work. Smaller, darker, wilder, and carrying more of the blue-purple pigments called anthocyanins. It also has a war record, which is a strange thing for a berry to have.

The legend goes like this. British pilots in World War II ate bilberry jam, then knocked German bombers out of the night sky with unsettling accuracy. The berry took the credit. The berry did not earn it. What actually let those pilots see in the dark was radar, which was new, secret, and much harder to spread on toast. The documented cover story of that era was about carrots, planted on purpose to keep the enemy from guessing about the radar. The Smithsonian has that receipt. Bilberry just wandered into the same myth later and never checked out.

So does a berry help a healthy person see in the dark? Somebody finally added up all the studies. A 2004 systematic review pulled together the placebo-controlled trials of bilberry anthocyanins on low-light vision. The most recent and best-run were randomized controlled trials, and they came back negative. If your night vision already works, bilberry is not going to hand you a pair of owl eyes. That is the honest headline, and it is roughly the opposite of what some bottles like to imply.

Here is the twist. The berry's real job in 2026 has nothing to do with flying at night. It has to do with the thing you are doing right this second, which is staring at a screen.

There is a small muscle in your eye called the ciliary muscle. It squeezes to focus up close and relaxes to focus far away. Stare at a phone for nine hours and it sort of forgets how to relax, like a hand that cramped around a steering wheel. A 2020 randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial gave 109 adults either 240 mg of standardized bilberry extract or a placebo every day for 12 weeks. After screen work, the bilberry group had measurably better ciliary muscle function than the placebo group. Not a cure. A measurable nudge in the exact muscle that does your focusing.

A separate randomized, placebo-controlled trial went after dry eye, the other modern eyeball complaint. People taking a standardized bilberry extract improved their tear production on the Schirmer test, the one where a technician tucks a little paper strip under your eyelid, which is precisely as relaxing as it sounds. The placebo group did not move. Two caveats, because we are not in the business of selling you owl eyes: that study was small, ran only 4 weeks, and was funded by the company that makes the extract. Small and sponsored is not the same as fake, but it is not the final word either.

The working theory is those anthocyanins. They are antioxidants, they turn up in eye tissue, and the eye is a busy, light-soaked, high-oxidation part of town. A 2022 review in Frontiers walks through the biochemistry without promising the moon, which is the correct tone for every bilberry conversation.
