Cat's claw is a rainforest vine named after its thorns, which curve like a cat's foot and help it climb toward sunlight. Uncaria tomentosa, if you want the Latin. Indigenous Peruvian groups have used the bark in traditional medicine for inflammation, infections and various conditions for hundreds of years.
Then the wellness industry discovered it.
Now every other cat's claw supplement label promises support for joints, immunity, digestion, cognitive clarity and, most recently, cat's claw nerve support. That last claim showed up about five minutes after someone in marketing read the word "transporter" in a journal abstract and decided it sounded neurological.
The Alkaloid That Blocks Traffic
The plant contains a family of compounds called oxindole alkaloids. One of them, isopteropodine, showed up in a 2024 study interacting with cellular transport proteins. Some of those proteins move neurotransmitters around. The supplement industry saw that, put "nerve support" on the bottle, and called it a product category.
What the study actually measured: transporter inhibition in engineered cell lines. The researchers used cells overexpressing specific proteins and tested how much cat's claw extract interfered with their normal function. Isopteropodine significantly inhibited OATP, OCT1, OCT2, OAT3, ENT4, MDR1 and BCRP transporters. The study concluded that cat's claw could cause herb-drug interactions, particularly in the intestine.
The researchers were trying to predict safety problems. Not prove benefits.
Blocking a transporter is not supporting the system the transporter serves. That is like saying jamming the elevator helps the building. But if an alkaloid touches a nerve-related protein, marketing can call it nervous system support and nobody checks the score.

Yeast Makes Alkaloids, Humans Remain Unimpressed
A 2025 study reconstructed the biosynthetic pathway for oxindole alkaloids in engineered yeast. Researchers identified four enzymes from button bush, inserted the genes into yeast, fed the yeast a precursor molecule, and successfully produced mitraphylline, isomitraphylline and uncarine F.
Elegant work. Good journal. A genuine breakthrough for synthetic biology.
Zero implications for a person taking cat's claw capsules.
Knowing how yeast synthesizes an alkaloid does not tell you what that alkaloid does in a mammal. Let alone in a human nerve cell. Let alone in a whole human being with context and other medications and a microbiome and an actual life. But it does generate a press release, and press releases generate sales, and here we are calling the play.
What the Plant Actually Does (In Rodents, Sometimes)
Cat's claw extracts have shown anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects in multiple animal studies. A 2024 meta-analysis of preclinical trials found that the extracts significantly reduced interleukin-6 and nuclear factor kappa-B, two markers of inflammation. The extracts did not significantly alter IL-1, IL-10 or TNF-alpha levels. Most studies used aqueous or hydroethanolic extracts of stem bark, root or leaves.
Effect size: modest. Model: rodents with induced inflammation. Translation to humans: unknown.
Connection to cat's claw nerve support: nonexistent, unless you count the fact that inflammation is bad for everything including nerves, which means every anti-inflammatory on earth could claim nerve support by that logic. Ibuprofen supports your nerves. Ice packs support your nerves. Not getting punched in the face supports your nerves.
A separate 2024 study found antiviral activity against chikungunya virus in cell culture. At 100 micrograms per milliliter, the extract inhibited viral replication by more than 90 percent after 24 and 48 hours. Impressive for an arbovirus nobody asked a supplement to fight. Irrelevant to the question of whether cat's claw alkaloids promote nerve growth factor signaling, which is the angle somebody sold this piece on and which exactly zero of the supplied studies actually tested.
The Studies That Do Not Exist
No published trial has measured nerve growth factor levels in humans taking cat's claw. No trial has measured nerve conduction velocity, cognitive performance, symptoms of peripheral nerve conditions, or any other nerve-related clinical outcome.
The phrase "nerve growth factor signaling in inflammatory models" appears in the assignment email but not in any abstract.
The evidence for cat's claw nerve support is a daisy chain of maybes. Maybe the alkaloids interact with transporters. Maybe some of those transporters matter for nerves. Maybe inhibiting them does something useful. Maybe the dose in a capsule is enough. Maybe it gets absorbed. Maybe it crosses the blood-brain barrier. Maybe it does not just get metabolized in the liver and pissed out in three hours.
That is seven maybes before you get to a benefit. I have seen boxing judges score fights on less.
What the Tradition Actually Said
The traditional use is real. Peruvian and Brazilian indigenous groups have used Uncaria tomentosa for inflammatory conditions, infections and pain for centuries. A 2025 review covering ethnomedicinal uses lists weakness, viral infections, skin disorders, abscesses, allergies, asthma, fevers, gastric ulcers, haemorrhages, inflammations, menstrual irregularity, urinary tract inflammation and wounds among the documented applications.
That body of knowledge deserves respect. The anti-inflammatory activity seen in lab studies is at least consistent with it.
But traditional healers were not dosing for nerve growth factor signaling. They were treating the whole person with a whole plant in a cultural and spiritual context that a standardized extract in a gel cap does not replicate. Calling that "nerve support" is not respect for the tradition. It is just searching the plant for a new angle to sell.
The Safety Conversation Nobody Wants
Cat's claw generally appears safe in the studies that bothered to track it. The 2025 review noted low toxicity across multiple preclinical models. The cytotoxicity study from 2025 found that most extracts were non-toxic to normal cells, though the crude aqueous bark extract did show toxicity in keratinocytes.
The transporter study raised flags about potential drug interactions. If you are on anything metabolized by MDR1, BCRP, OCT1, OCT2 or OAT3, that is a conversation for your pharmacist, not a supplement aisle.
The other safety issue is what you are not getting. If someone skips an evidence-based intervention because a bottle promised natural nerve wellness, that is harm. The kind that does not show up in a safety study because nobody tracked the outcome that did not happen.
Final score: cat's claw has a documented history, real chemistry and some interesting lab activity. It does not have human evidence for the claim on the bottle. The gap between "this alkaloid inhibited a transporter in a cell line" and "supports your nervous system" is the width of the entire Amazon basin, and the supplement industry crossed it in a single marketing meeting.
