Cayenne pepper supplement blood flow: most capsules are rather polite

Capsaicin, the alkaloid responsible for the heat in chilli peppers, activates a protein called transient receptor potential vanilloid member 1, or TRPV1, which sounds like a television channel one receives by accident and cannot find again. When TRPV1 opens, blood vessels dilate. That is the mechanism by which cayenne pepper supplement blood flow effects are said to occur, and it is rather elegant, biochemically speaking.

The difficulty is that most cayenne supplements contain nowhere near enough capsaicin to activate the receptor in any robust way.

Which means you are swallowing politeness.

What the capsaicinoid characterisation studies actually measured

A 2023 study published in Molecules took three varieties of Capsicum annuum, extracted their phenolic compounds and capsaicinoids using high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with ion trap mass spectrometry, and then modelled the binding affinity of those compounds to TRPV1 using protein docking simulations. The varieties were Friariello, a non-pungent type, Cayenne, and Dzuljunska Sipka, which is pungent. Friariello recorded the lowest total polyphenol content at three point five eight grams of gallic acid equivalents per kilogram of dry weight. Dzuljunska Sipka, the pungent one, recorded eight point nine one.

The simulations indicated that different capsaicinoids can interact with the TRPV1 receptor with similar predicted binding energy values, which is reassuring if the capsaicinoids are actually present in sufficient quantity.

That is rather the point.

The study characterised what was in the peppers. It did not test whether five hundred milligrams of dried Friariello in a capsule would do anything to anyone's circulation, because it would not, and everyone involved knew that. One imagines the authors were being tactful.

How much cayenne for circulation, if we are being serious

A review in Applied Biochemistry and Biotechnology in 2023 listed capsaicinoids among the bioactive compounds in twenty-four tropical spices and herbs. It noted anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antioxidant, and cardiovascular activities. It did not, I am afraid, specify the capsaicinoid dose required to produce any of those effects in a living human being. One imagines it varies. The review was five thousand words long and mentioned capsaicinoids three times, which suggests even the authors were not entirely convinced this was the main event.

A 2022 review in Molecules stated that capsaicin can ameliorate important viral diseases and provides pain relief as a topical agent. It also noted that capsaicin operates in synergy with other phytochemicals present in chilli peppers, which is a polite way of saying that isolating one compound and putting it in a gel cap is not the same as eating the pepper.

Which it is not.

A 2018 review in the Iranian Journal of Basic Medical Sciences summarised animal and human studies on red pepper and capsaicin in metabolic syndrome. It reported lipid-lowering, antihypertensive, antidiabetic, and anti-obesity effects. The review concluded that red pepper has beneficial effects on metabolic syndrome and can decrease the risk of mortality due to cardiovascular diseases, but that more research is needed, particularly in humans.

That is academic for 'we are not certain'.

The strongest cayenne pills still will not tell you the one number that matters

Most high potency cayenne capsules list total cayenne powder by weight. Five hundred milligrams of cayenne powder. A thousand milligrams. Occasionally fifteen hundred, which sounds rather a lot until you realise it is one and a half grams, which is less than a quarter teaspoon. You could sneeze that.

What they do not list is capsaicinoid content.

Cayenne powder can contain anywhere from zero point one percent to one point five percent capsaicinoids by weight, depending on the variety, the growing conditions, the harvest timing, the drying method, and whether anyone involved was paying attention. A five hundred milligram capsule of cayenne powder might contain two milligrams of capsaicin. It might contain six. It might contain trace amounts that would register on a spectrometer but not on a receptor.

The label does not say.

If you are searching for the best cayenne capsule dosage for blood flow, the packaging will tell you how much dried plant matter is in the capsule. It will not tell you how much of the thing that actually does the work is in the plant matter. That is rather like being told how much flour went into the cake. One is pleased to know, but it does not indicate whether the cake will rise.

Capsaicin dosage circulation support, if the label bothered to specify it

A 2017 review in the Journal of Food and Drug Analysis discussed extraction methods and bioavailability of capsaicinoids. It noted pharmacological benefits including pain relief, anti-inflammation, and cardio-protection, and stated that capsaicinoids are absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract and metabolised in the liver. Bioavailability, the review noted, depends on the formulation and the presence of other compounds.

Which means that a pure capsaicin isolate behaves differently than cayenne pepper, which behaves differently than a cayenne extract standardised to a particular capsaicinoid percentage, assuming the extract is standardised at all, which most are not.

Some manufacturers do standardise. A small number of cayenne extract products state capsaicinoid content as a percentage, or list capsaicin in milligrams. Those are the ones worth considering if the goal is vasodilation rather than placebo participation. If the label says 'cayenne pepper 500 mg' and nothing else, you are buying cayenne pepper. If it says 'cayenne extract standardised to two percent capsaicinoids', you are buying ten milligrams of capsaicinoids per five hundred milligram dose, which is at least a number one can work with.

Whether ten milligrams is sufficient to activate TRPV1 in a way that produces measurable vasodilation in a human adult is not a question the product marketing answers, because the product marketing is not allowed to make that claim, and also because no one appears to have run the trial.

A modest inconvenience, then, rather than a catastrophe.

Where to buy cayenne capsules, assuming strong means anything

A 2019 review in Biomedicine & Pharmacotherapy noted that capsaicinoids display robust anti-angiogenic activity in both cell culture and mice models. Angiogenesis is the formation of new blood vessels, which tumours require and which capsaicinoids appear to inhibit under certain conditions. The review also noted conflicting reports about capsaicinoids' effects on invasion and metastasis of cancers, with some studies describing anti-invasive effects and others suggesting the opposite.

One imagines the dose, the model, and the cancer type all matter rather a lot.

The trouble with searching for high capsaicin cayenne pepper supplements is that 'high' is not a regulated term. A product labelled 'extra strength' or 'maximum potency' might contain more cayenne than the standard version, which tells you nothing about whether the standard version contained any capsaicin worth mentioning. It is rather like a hotel calling itself 'deluxe'. Compared to what.

If you want cayenne for circulation support, buy a product that lists capsaicinoid content in milligrams or as a standardised percentage. If the label does not state that, you are buying dried vegetable matter of unknown potency, which is fine if you enjoy the flavour, less useful if you are after a specific receptor interaction.

And if you are wondering whether the dose in the bottle is enough to do anything, the answer is that no one has definitively established what 'enough' is in this context, which is unfortunate but not surprising.
