Conjugated linoleic acid is a fatty acid produced during bacterial biohydrogenation in the rumen of cattle, a process which sounds vaguely alchemical and is in fact merely digestive, the sort of thing that happens in the third stomach when no one is looking. The supplement industry has taken this compound, isolated it, encapsulated it, and marketed it as a body composition aid with what one might charitably describe as optimism. The CLA conjugated linoleic acid supplement now occupies shelf space in every establishment that sells hope in gelatin form, positioned between the fat burners and the meal replacements, looking confident about its future.
The research is considerably less confident.
What The Cattle Trials Actually Established
A 2026 review of CLA supplementation in livestock reports that the trans-10,cis-12 isomer, when fed to cattle, reduces subcutaneous fat and improves intramuscular fat content in beef carcasses. This is excellent news if one's goal is marbled steak. The trials were conducted on ruminants and pigs, none of whom were consulted about their fitness objectives. The dose, timing, and method of supplementation all mattered a great deal. The results were described, in the careful language of agricultural science, as inconsistent and conflicting, which is rather like saying the weather has been variable. It means the effect appeared sometimes, under some conditions, and wandered off under others.
One notes that none of the cattle were asked to perform resistance training, track their macros, or document their progress on social media.
The cis-9,trans-11 isomer accounts for eighty percent of naturally occurring CLA. The trans-10,cis-12 form is rarer and appears to do most of the work the marketing describes. A grass fed CLA supplement contains both, in proportions that depend on what the cows ate, where they grazed, and whether the manufacturer is being forthright about any of it, which is a separate question entirely.

The Human Trials, Such As They Are
A 2025 study of ninety-six older adults examined associations between diet and metabolic health, with an eye toward insulin sensitivity and body composition. The researchers found that in women, CLA intake was associated with insulin sensitivity. Alcohol intake was more strongly associated. One imagines the research team noted this in the margins with a certain resignation, possibly over a glass of wine. In men, vegetable protein predicted insulin sensitivity rather better than conjugated linoleic acid, as did whole grains, nuts, and seeds. The CLA appeared to be somewhere further down the list, looking hopeful but not essential, rather like the backup singers.
This was an observational study, not a supplementation trial, which means it recorded what people ate and what happened to them, without instructing anyone to do anything in particular. It suggests an association. It does not suggest causation, and it certainly does not suggest that CLA works for weight management independent of everything else on the plate, the training plan, or the decade of life one happens to be in.
A separate analysis of plasma metabolites in COPD patients and controls found that conjugated linoleic acid levels were decreased in COPD, alongside eight other metabolites spanning muscle-related pools, amino acid handling, and carbohydrate metabolism. The pattern was described as compatible with metabolic depletion and remodeling. It was not described as a CLA deficiency, because that is not how systemic metabolic perturbation works, but one suspects the supplement copywriters will find a way to describe it as exactly that by Thursday.
The Bit About Resistance Training That Rather Changes Things
Trials of a CLA conjugated linoleic acid supplement combined with resistance training do report measurable changes in body composition. The trouble is that resistance training also reports measurable changes in body composition, rather reliably, and has done so for some decades without requiring a ruminant byproduct. Separating the effect of the capsule from the effect of lifting progressively heavier objects three times a week is the sort of work that requires a proper placebo-controlled design, adequate sample size, and researchers who are not funded by the people selling the capsules. Such trials exist. The results have been described as mixed, which is a polite way of saying they disagree with one another in fundamental ways.
The dose matters. The isomer ratio matters. The training protocol matters. Whether one is in energy deficit matters. One's baseline body composition matters. The length of the intervention matters. Whether Mercury is in retrograde has not been studied, but one feels it would fit comfortably into the list. It is the sort of multi-variable problem that does not compress neatly into take two daily and watch what happens, though that has not stopped anyone from printing it on the label in eighteen-point font.
If you are already doing the work in the gym, tracking your sessions, progressing your loads, and eating enough protein to justify it all, a CLA conjugated linoleic acid supplement for body composition may produce a small additional shift that shows up on a DEXA scan after twelve weeks. It will not produce that shift if you are not doing the work. This is perhaps unsurprising, but the marketing does not lead with it, and the influencer holding the bottle in the advert is not disclosing his training age.
A Thoroughly Modest Proposal
The CLA conjugated linoleic acid supplement is not a fraud. It is simply not a shortcut, not a hack, and not a substitute for the boring work that actually changes body composition. It may, under specific conditions, in specific populations, when combined with specific training stimulus and dietary context, produce a measurable improvement in intramuscular fat deposition or a modest reduction in subcutaneous fat that would not have occurred otherwise. It may also do nothing at all, or do something too small to notice outside a laboratory with a very expensive scanner. The literature contains examples of all three outcomes, often in the same review paper, which is how one knows the reviewers are being honest rather than helpful.
If one is lifting heavy objects several times a week, eating adequate protein, sleeping enough, and looking for an incremental edge that might, possibly, show up in one's body composition over three months, then by all means. The grass fed beef CLA supplement results in that context are defensible, if not dramatic. If one is not doing those things, the capsule will sit in one's system and accomplish very little, much like a committee that met four times, discussed terms of reference, and adjourned without recording minutes.
One rather suspects the cattle are not consulted on any of this, which is probably for the best.
