Somebody came in last week asking about supplements for competitive gaming stress, and I looked at him like he just asked me to fix his car. Brother, I sell cardboard and rhodiola. Pick a lane.

But he serious. He run a tournament scene, Friday Night Magic type setup, and he say half his players show up tense, stay tense, and leave looking like they just got audited. Which, fair. I seen grown men argue about a mana curve for forty minutes. That ain't relaxation. That is litigation without a judge.

So I did what I always do when somebody wave a credit card and a theory at me: I read the studies. And what I found out is your body do not care if the threat is real or imaginary. Competitive gaming stress is real stress. Your adrenal glands making real cortisol because your nervous system treating a dice roll like a bear attack. Which is ridiculous. And also completely accurate.

Your Hobby Is Producing Cortisol, and That Ain't a Metaphor

Researchers in Thailand ran a trial with twenty college students playing Realm of Valor, which is a multiplayer battle arena game on a phone. These kids played in teams. Some played three matches, about an hour total. Some played seven matches, closer to three hours. Heart rate went up in both groups. No surprise there. You competing, your pulse know it.

But stress only spiked after the long session.

And the women in the study showed bigger increases in stress than the men, which match what we see at the counter: dudes get loud when they lose, women get quiet and stop sleeping. Neither one of them is fine, they just show it different. The tabletop games cortisol response is real, it is measurable, and it do not care how much fun you say you having.

Selective attention improved after the short session. Got worse after the long one. Your brain work better when you quit while you ahead, which is advice nobody ever take because the person winning don't want to stop and the person losing can't.

Exercise Beat Every Supplement in the Stack

Now, if you thinking a pill gonna fix it, let me tell you what actually worked. A six-week trial out of China put eighty-three first-person shooter players through high-intensity interval training. Real cardio. Sweating. The kind where you can't talk and play at the same time.

The intervention group improved reaction time, tracking, flicking, shooting accuracy, and decision-making. The control group, the ones who kept sitting, did not improve at all. Zero. Not one category. And here the part that matter for anybody looking at supplements for gaming anxiety and focus: the exercise also improved VO2 max and sleep quality, and the change in aerobic capacity correlated with the change in reaction time.

Which mean the benefit came from the mitochondria, not the shopping cart.

A second systematic review looking at twelve studies on physical exercise and esports performance found the same thing. Acute bouts of exercise, six to thirty minutes, improved executive function, reaction time, and aiming accuracy when players tested right after. Chronic programs, eight to ten weeks of regular training, improved grip strength, overall coordination, and cognitive flexibility. And rest intervals up to thirty minutes between the workout and the game did not kill the effect, which mean you can actually do this before a tournament without showing up tired. You just gotta show up sweaty, which is the part nobody want to hear.

The Supplement That Worked Did Not Fix What You Think It Fixed

One trial did find a supplement that improved performance. Researchers gave League of Legends players a blend with methylsulfonylmethane, L-tyrosine, rhodiola, turmeric, and chromium picolinate. The intervention group had better win rates, fewer deaths per loss, and better gold efficiency than the placebo group. Real differences. Published numbers.

But.

Decision fatigue scores did not change. Cognitive test scores went up a little but not enough to call it significant. The supplement helped performance without calming the system. It made them better at the thing that was stressing them out, which is useful if you trying to win and completely beside the point if you trying to figure out how to manage stress from competitive board games. You just optimizing the panic.

You want best supplements for competitive players? Rhodiola show up in enough studies that I stock it. L-tyrosine got a reasonable case for focus under pressure. But neither one of them is gonna override three hours of head to head competitive gaming stress if you do not also move your body and stop when the session turn into work.

What Actually Helps With Competitive Gaming Stress

A German study followed 178 kids from age seven to age thirteen and tracked their gaming habits and their cortisol. The ones who developed internet gaming disorder symptoms by adolescence showed elevated psychological stress and behavioral problems in self-reports. Mother reports did not catch it, which tell you how good teenagers are at looking fine when they not.

And here the part that made me put the paper down: girls with more gaming disorder symptoms had lower hair cortisol at age thirteen. Not higher. Lower. Which suggest the system either adapting or giving up, and neither one of those is a win. That is your stress response waving a white flag.

The study did not look at supplements. It looked at what happen when competition become chronic. And what happen is the same thing that happen when any stressor go on too long: the body stop responding right, and the person stop noticing.

If you asking what helps with nervousness during competition, the research say: shorter sessions, scheduled breaks, and actual movement between rounds. The Thailand trial found cognitive benefits held up to an hour. Past that, you paying a cost. You might still be winning, but your brain losing. And your brain don't care about the leaderboard.

Recovery That Don't Cost Forty Dollars

I got recovery supplements for competitive tabletop gamers on the shelf, and some of them got decent evidence. But if you come in here asking for chemical stress relief after gaming and you have not tried walking for fifteen minutes after a match, I am gonna look at you the same way I look at somebody who want a sleep supplement but drink coffee at nine PM.

Fix the free thing first.

The exercise studies used interval training, which is hard. But the data suggest even light movement post-game brought heart rate and cortisol back down faster than remaining sedentary. The systematic review found benefits from sessions as short as six minutes, and rest periods up to thirty minutes after exercise still showed performance gains. Six minutes. You can walk to the bodega and back in six minutes.

Rhodiola might smooth the edge. Tyrosine might help you think faster under pressure. Magnesium before bed might help you sleep after a tense session. I sell all of it and I ain't mad if you buy it. But none of it replace the thing the studies actually measured as effective after sustained competitive play, which is structured movement, adequate recovery time between sessions, and recognizing when your recreation starting to look like a second shift.

You rolling dice, not running from a predator. Your adrenal glands just can't tell the difference. And no adaptogen on earth gonna convince them otherwise if you keep scheduling your recreation like it is a job with a performance review.
