Glycine Goes In, Your Hands Get Warm, and Your Core Temperature Takes the Hint

Falling asleep looks like the brain powering down. Mechanically, a good chunk of it is plumbing. Your core temperature has to drop by roughly a degree before your brain will sign off on sleep, and the body pulls that off by pushing warm blood out toward the hands and feet to shed heat. Glycine, the smallest amino acid on the roster, happens to work that exact valve.

Glycine is not exotic. It is a non-essential amino acid, which is a polite way of saying your body makes its own and does not need you fussing over it. It is the main building block of collagen, it moonlights as a neurotransmitter, and you already eat three to five grams of it a day in bone broth, meat, eggs, beans and spinach. Nobody sells spinach as a sleep aid, but the glycine in it did not get that memo.

Here is the part worth the ticket. The suprachiasmatic nucleus is the master clock buried in your hypothalamus, the thing that decides when you feel awake and when you feel like furniture. Glycine acts on NMDA receptors sitting inside that clock. When it does, the body opens blood flow to the skin and the extremities, warm blood radiates heat out through your hands and feet, and core temperature slides down. In a 2015 rat study, glycine raised blood flow to the paws, dropped core temperature, and increased non-REM sleep. Lesion the suprachiasmatic nucleus and the whole effect vanishes, which is how the researchers knew the clock was the middleman and not a bystander.

Warm hands, cool core, and the brain files that under bedtime. It is the same trick as a warm bath an hour before bed. You heat the surface so the center can dump heat and cool off.

The human evidence is smaller but points the same way. In a 2007 study using overnight polysomnography, people who took three grams of glycine before bed fell asleep faster, reached deep slow-wave sleep faster, and rated their sleep as better, with no distortion of sleep architecture on the machine. Translation: it did not drug them into a strange sleep, it just got them to the normal one quicker. A 2012 trial took the meaner route and cut volunteers' sleep short for three nights straight. The glycine group came out less wrecked the next day, scoring better on vigilance and memory tasks than the placebo group. An earlier 2006 study reported the same bump in subjective sleep quality.

Now the honest part, because a supplement with nothing but good news is usually hiding something. These human studies are small, and several were run by researchers connected to a company that makes glycine. That does not make the results fake, but it does mean the evidence is early rather than settled, and the temperature mechanism is still mostly animal work. Glycine is also not a sedative. It will not hit you like a prescription sleep drug, and if you are waiting to be clobbered, you will be let down. It nudges. For a lot of people, a nudge was the missing piece.

Dose and timing are refreshingly boring. The studies used three grams, taken thirty to sixty minutes before bed. That amount was well tolerated with no real side effects, while much larger doses can bring on nausea, which is your body asking you to reread the label. It is also not a fix for a bedroom that is too warm, a phone in your face, or a 4 p.m. espresso, all of which will beat glycine in a fair fight.

One point of confusion worth clearing up: glycine and magnesium glycinate are not the same thing. Magnesium glycinate is magnesium bonded to glycine for gentler absorption. Plain glycine is just the amino acid, and it is cheap. Some people pair it with L-theanine for the wind-down, and glycine's day job building collagen means it stays busy whether or not you are asleep.
