You ever sit across from somebody playing go for six hours and they tell you it's meditative? That person selling you something. Probably incense. Go player mental stamina is a real thing with a real ceiling, and when you hit it, the board don't care how Zen you feeling.
I watch this every weekend. Two players sit down at noon looking sharp, thinking clear, playing like they got all the time in the world. By six PM one of them is staring at a simple life-and-death problem like it's written in Swedish. That ain't a collapse. That's just what happens when your brain runs out of gas and you still got forty moves to closing.
Turns out science been tracking this. And what they found is: your focus got an expiration date, and the board knows exactly when it hits.
When The Wheels Come Off (And They Do Come Off)
Researchers looking at competitive athletes measured psychomotor performance before and after long matches. In one study of 101 player-match observations, reaction time slowed, response accuracy dropped, and variability went up across the board post-game. We talking professional soccer players here, but the pattern holds: your brain is a physical system and it fatigues same as your legs.
High-intensity cognitive load during competition was weakly associated with greater reaction-time slowing and reduced accuracy. Meaning: the harder you thought, the worse you got by the end. And here's the part that matters for anybody playing tournament go: it wasn't about effort. It was about duration under complexity.
Hour one, you fine. Hour four, you slipping. Hour six, you making moves you would roast somebody else for making.
The kicker? You don't even notice it happening. Post-match reviews are when you find out your middle game looked like you learned the rules that morning.
Complexity Is The Killer, Not The Clock
It ain't just that the game is long. It's that the game is long AND hard at the same time. Another study looked at what happens when you increase task complexity during extended cognitive demand. Twenty semi-pro soccer players ran small-sided games in different formats: 12 minutes straight, two six-minute blocks, three four-minute blocks.
The continuous 12-minute session produced better technical performance than the broken-up versions, but it also spiked fatigue, heart rate, and perceived effort. Mood improved in the long block but tanked in the shorter interrupted formats, with negative affect and anger both rising. Translation: your brain likes a sustained rhythm better than constant stop-start, but sustained rhythm also costs more.

In go, that's your mid-game. You in four fights at once, fifteen groups on the board, reading six moves deep in three directions, and your mental stamina is holding all of that in working memory while you calculate. That is when tournament go concentration collapses. Not in the opening. Not in a simple endgame.
The match goes long enough, the collapse is guaranteed. Your brain will tap out. It is not a question of discipline. It is a question of glycogen, acetylcholine, and how many hours you been burning both.
What Actually Helps (And What's Just Expensive Hope)
Some supplement companies out here selling you focus and energy support like it's gonna fix six-hour fatigue in a capsule. It won't. A capsule ain't gonna replace sleep, food, or the fact that your prefrontal cortex has a duty cycle.
What the research shows is simpler and cheaper. Another study on esports players, who deal with similar sustained attention demands, found that acute physical exercise improved reaction time, aiming accuracy, and executive function. We talking 6 to 30 minutes of movement, sometimes an hour before competition. Chronic training over eight weeks showed gains in coordination and grip strength but mixed results on direct performance measures.
Rest intervals up to 30 minutes between the exercise and the match did not kill the benefit. Meaning: you can take a walk, do some stretches, get your heart rate up, then sit down and play better than if you just sat there stewing.
For long games, physical prep matters as much as game prep. You train board game endurance the same way you train an opening repertoire: you put in the hours under realistic conditions. You play long games. You practice when you tired. You learn what your brain feels like at hour five so you recognize it during the tournament and adjust.
And you eat. And you sleep the night before. And you take your bathroom breaks instead of holding it for two hours because you don't wanna lose momentum. All of that is part of how to stay focused during long go matches, and none of it comes in a bottle.
Your Brain Is Not Infinite And That Is Fine
One more study tracked psychological recovery in team athletes post-competition. Thirty-eight male players, football and basketball, logged their fatigue and recovery strategies over time. The data showed two clear profiles: some players leaned into mental recovery strategies, others into psychological detachment. The split point? A flourishing score of 7.19 out of 10. Below that, you needed active mental work to reset. Above it, you could just unplug.
The lesson for competitive go player fatigue is this: recovery is not optional and it is not one-size. Some people need a quiet room and a book. Some people need to go outside and talk to somebody about anything but the game. Neither one is wrong. Both are necessary.
You gonna lose focus. Your reaction time gonna slow. Your reading gonna get shallow right when the game gets deep. That is not a character flaw. That is biology. The question is whether you planned for it or whether you just hoped it wouldn't happen to you.
Spoiler: it happened to you.
Train the endurance. Respect the limits. Take the breaks. And when somebody try to sell you expensive hope in a capsule, ask them which study measured that. Then wait.
You gonna be waiting a while.
