The supplement industry sells hemp seed oil for heart health on the strength of a linoleic acid ratio that approximately nobody discloses, that most manufacturers do not measure, and that varies by batch, harvest and extraction method in ways the consumer has no practical means of verifying. One purchases the bottle. One reads the label. The label promises cardiovascular support in language carefully drafted to promise nothing at all. One is left with a very expensive cooking oil and the faint sense of having been extremely polite to a confidence trick.
This is not an accusation of fraud, you understand.
It is merely an observation that the active claim, the entire reason people buy hemp seed oil heart health products in the first place, rests on a number that does not appear on the packaging and may not exist in the bottle.
What the Research on Hemp Seed Oil Heart Health Actually Measures
A review published in Molecules in 2026 examined the phospholipid composition and fatty acid profiles of six niche oils, hemp seed among them. The researchers compared cold pressing, solvent extraction, supercritical CO2, microwave-assisted and aqueous enzymatic methods, which is thorough. They found that total phospholipid content in hemp varied from half a percent to over one percent depending on the tissue examined and the extraction process used. The polyunsaturated fatty acid content in the phospholipid fraction, the bit that matters for the cardiovascular framing, was not reported as a single number.
It was reported as a range, contingent on method.
Which is scientifically responsible and commercially useless.
The study did not test finished retail products. It tested seed material under controlled conditions. A finished bottle of hemp seed oil may have been cold pressed from seed harvested in August, or solvent extracted from seed stored for six months, or subjected to a process the label calls 'gently prepared' and the chemist calls something else entirely. The label does not say. The linoleic acid ratio hemp seed oil delivers, the number on which the heart health claim is presumably based, is therefore unknown to the person buying it, possibly unknown to the person bottling it, and quite possibly irrelevant to the person writing the copy.

The By-Product Does One Thing, the Oil May Do Another, and Neither May Be the Thing You Wanted
A study published in Animal Nutrition in 2026 tested hempseed cake, the fibrous material left over after oil extraction, as a feed supplement for dairy cows. Fifteen cows were divided into three groups over three 24-day periods in a Latin square design, which sounds rather more organised than most human nutrition trials. One group received a basal diet. A second group had 10 percent of their grass silage replaced with apple pomace. A third had 10 percent of their concentrate replaced with hempseed cake.
The cows fed hempseed cake increased their dry matter intake by 3.4 percent and their milk yield by 11.3 percent. Rumen propionate production rose, the acetate-to-propionate ratio fell, and urinary and methane energy outputs dropped as a proportion of gross energy intake. Energy partitioned toward milk rather than heat or waste. The crude protein digestibility improved. The cows, one imagines, were thriving.
These are all perfectly sensible findings for a feed ingredient tested in a ruminant with four stomach compartments and a microbial fermentation system that can extract nutrition from cardboard. They tell us nothing about the oil. They certainly tell us nothing about the best hemp seed oil supplement for a human being with one stomach, no rumen, and a markedly inferior ability to digest fibre.
It is a bit like discovering that sawdust improves the texture of particleboard and concluding that timber framing supports joint health.
The Dog Study That Examined Everything Except the Claim
A 2026 study in Veterinary Sciences tracked the fecal microbiota of 24 dogs over 90 days. The dogs were divided into three groups: a control diet, a diet containing 11 percent hempseed by-product, and a diet coated with 2 percent hempseed oil. Fecal samples were collected on days zero, 30 and 90, then analysed using 16S rRNA gene sequencing, which sounds like a great deal of effort on behalf of the dogs.
The hempseed oil group showed a measurable increase in species richness. The oil coating raised the relative abundance of Lactobacillaceae, particularly Ligilactobacillus. The by-product raised Actinobacteriota, notably Collinsella. Both treatments stabilised by day 90 without ecological disruption. The researchers were pleased.
These are reasonable findings for a microbiome study. They are not findings about heart health. They are not findings about humans. They are findings about what happens in the colon of a dog when you feed it hemp material for three months, which is a different question entirely and not the question anyone clicked on this article hoping to see answered.
One imagines the researchers were studying what they could measure, rather than what the marketing department would have preferred them to find.
What You Cannot Learn from a Bottle of Hemp Seed Oil
The problem is not that hemp seed oil lacks a plausible mechanism. The problem is that the mechanism, assuming it exists, depends on a fatty acid composition that varies by source and processing, and which the label does not disclose because nobody is requiring them to. A consumer comparing two bottles has no means of determining which, if either, contains the linoleic acid ratio that the research, such as it is, would suggest matters for cardiovascular function.
The label will say 'cold pressed.' It will not say from which batch, stored how long, or what the resulting fatty acid profile turned out to be once the bottle was filled. It will promise support, wellness, balance, all the usual pleasantries. It will not print a number, because numbers can be checked.
This is not unique to hemp. It is the structure of the supplement industry. A claim is made. The claim rests on a measurable thing. The measurable thing is not measured. The bottle is sold anyway. One buys it in good faith, or in hope, or because the alternative is doing nothing and doing nothing feels worse, and at least this way one has done something, however expensive and however uncertain.
One suspects that is rather the point.
