Hops extract gets marketed for sleep. The research measured whether women felt less bothered by menopause.
Those are not the same outcome. Both are on the bottle.
The active compound is 8-prenylnaringenin. It is the most potent phytoestrogen anyone has identified in a plant. Most supplements list 'hops extract' and stop there.
You do not know if the prenylnaringenin is in your bottle. That is not a labelling oversight. That is the business model.
The Beer Study Tracked Menopause, Not Sleep
In a six-month trial published in Nutrients in 2021, thirty-seven postmenopausal women were assigned to three groups. Sixteen drank 330 mL of regular beer daily. Seven drank 660 mL of non-alcoholic beer daily. Fourteen were the control group and drank nothing special.
At the end, both beer groups reported reduced severity of menopause-related symptoms compared to the control group.
Sleep quality was one item on the questionnaire. Nobody wore a sleep tracker. Nobody measured sleep latency, wake episodes, or REM cycles.
The participants said they felt better about their menopause symptoms, and one of those symptoms was sleep. That is what the data shows.
The study did not compare hops extract sleep supplements to placebo. It compared beer to no beer, then asked how menopause was going.
The researchers attributed the benefit to isoxanthohumol, which the gut converts into 8-prenylnaringenin.
The gut. Which means bacteria. Which means it varies by person. Which means nobody actually knows.
The Compound Nobody Lists
A 2017 paper in the Journal of Natural Products described a method for designing hops extracts with specific levels of 8-prenylnaringenin and xanthohumol, another bioactive compound in hops.
They built extracts for premenopausal women with low 8-PN and high xanthohumol, targeting chemopreventive effects without estrogenic activity. They built a different extract for postmenopausal women, balancing both compounds.
This was a laboratory methods paper. It proved you can control what goes in the bottle.
No commercial prenylnaringenin supplement I have seen specifies the 8-PN content. The label says 'hops extract', gives a total milligram amount, and stops.

You are buying an unspecified mixture of whatever was in the cone when it was picked.
Xanthohumol can antagonise the estrogenic effect of 8-prenylnaringenin, according to the same 2017 study. If your extract has too much xanthohumol, the phytoestrogen might not do anything.
The bottle does not tell you. The bottle could tell you. The bottle does not want to.
What the Systematic Review Found, and Did Not Find
A 2026 systematic review in Nutrients looked at thirty randomised controlled trials of non-soy herbal supplements for menopausal symptoms. Nineteen different herbal interventions were tested. Twenty-eight of the thirty trials reported some improvement.
The reviewers concluded that the substantial heterogeneity in interventions, doses, durations, and assessment methods made it impossible to draw an overall conclusion.
That is the scientific way of saying the studies were too different to compare. The polite way of saying nobody was measuring the same thing twice.
Hops was one of the nineteen herbs. The review did not isolate hops extract sleep trials as a separate analysis. It was grouped with everything else that showed any positive signal on any menopause questionnaire.
A 2021 review in Molecules stated that available data do not fully support the use of hops for menopausal symptoms. The same review said black cohosh and red clover were more consistently effective in clinical studies.
Hops is in the 'some evidence, not enough' category.
That does not stop it from being sold as sleep support in five different aisles.
The Phytoestrogen Nobody Can Measure in Your Body
8-prenylnaringenin is produced when gut bacteria metabolise isoxanthohumol from hops. A 2022 review in Plants noted that the compound's strong estrogenic activity has been well documented in laboratory models.
The same review stated that studies have shown hop compounds can modulate signalling pathways including ERK1/2 phosphorylation, PI3K-Akt, and NF-κB.
Those are cell culture findings. The beer trial gave people beer and asked them how they felt. There is a distance between those two things, and it is called a human body.
Gut bacteria vary between individuals. The amount of 8-prenylnaringenin produced from the same dose of hops is not consistent across people.
Nobody measures it.
The supplements contain hops. Intestines contain bacteria. Somewhere in between, a phytoestrogen might happen. That is not a mechanism. That is a guess with enzymes.
If You Are Shopping for This Anyway
A hops supplement with prenylnaringenin listed on the label is better than one that only says 'hops extract'. The second one is a plant in a capsule. The first one is at least trying to standardise something.
The beer study used 330 mL of regular beer, which the researchers estimated contained a certain amount of isoxanthohumol. They did not measure the 8-PN in anyone's blood. They measured symptom scores on a questionnaire.
The 2017 methods paper showed it is possible to make targeted hops extract sleep products with controlled 8-PN levels. Somebody could do that commercially.
Most supplement makers have not.
Read the label. If it does not list 8-prenylnaringenin, you do not know if it is in there. If it does not list xanthohumol, you do not know if that is blocking the 8-PN.
You are buying a plant. The research is interesting. The products are vague.
The gap between those two facts is where the marketing lives.
