Nine people. They ran a whole study on jigsaw puzzles focus and cognition with nine people. Not ninety. Not nine hundred. Nine. You could fit the entire sample size in two Ubers and still have room for they cousin who talk too much.
But they published it anyway. And now we gotta talk about whether jigsaw puzzles focus your brain or just give your hands something to do while you avoid folding laundry.
The Study That Thought Real Small
Researchers in 2025 enrolled nine people living with dementia in something called the Jigsawdio program.
Jig. Saw. Dio.
Somebody got a whole degree and then named a program Jigsawdio. That person went home and told they family they had a productive day. They family nodded and changed the subject.
The program ran twice a week for six weeks. Thirty to forty minutes a session. Participants worked on personalized digital jigsaw puzzles that played music and showed photos meaningful to them. Multi-sensory, they called it. Which is just a five-dollar word for it do two things at once.
They measured cognition and depression before and after.
Cognition scores went up an average of 4.55 points. Depression scores dropped. Both changes was statistically significant, meaning they probably wasn't just luck.
Now 4.55 points sound real good until you find out the cognitive test they used got a hundred and forty-four points total. We talking about three percent movement. On a test. For people already dealing with memory and focus problems. It movement, yeah. It ain't a revolution. It a rounding error with a press release.
What Puzzles Improve Concentration Actually Means
The researchers said the puzzles helped with attention and engagement. And look, I believe that. You sit down with a five hundred piece landscape, your phone in the other room, your hands busy, and some music you like playing? Yeah, you gonna focus. That exactly what focusing feel like.
But puzzles improve concentration the same way washing dishes improve concentration. You doing a thing that require you to pay attention to the thing. The puzzle ain't training nothing. The puzzle just is the thing you concentrating on. That like saying the stairs is a leg workout. Technically true. Also not the point.

Meanwhile, In the World of Slightly Bigger Studies
The 2025 scoping review looked at gamified systems for assessing cognitive impairment. Eighty-one articles. Forty-nine different systems. Some of them was casual games, some was simulation games, some was full-body motion stuff that look like a Wii fell into a research grant. They was looking at whether games could measure cognitive decline, not fix it.
Fourteen of the forty-nine systems had actual validation studies. Sensitivity ranged from seventy percent to a hundred. Sounds good until you notice the sample sizes was small and the designs was retrospective. Meaning they looked backwards at data that already existed and tried to find a pattern. That like calling a treasure hunt a map.
They said the diagnostic performance was comparable to standard screening tools. Which mean it might work as good as the thing we already got. That a real modest claim dressed up in real confident language.
And Then They Taught Pigeons to Play Pacman
I am not making this part up.
Researchers in 2026 taught pigeons to play a touchscreen video game that looked like Pacman. They called it a grid-world navigation task, but it was Pacman. The pigeon moved a little character across a grid to a banana. Hit the banana, animation plays, food gets delivered, pigeon happy.
Then they added barriers. The pigeon learned to go around them.
Then they added portals. Step in one spot, pop out another spot. The pigeon learned that too.
Then they tested whether the pigeon could combine the two skills in a new situation. And some of them could. They showed what the researchers called functional generalization and insight.
Which is a real fancy way to say: the pigeon figured it out.
Now I love pigeons. I got no problem with pigeons. But if your brain training puzzle games study got the same sample size as a pigeon experiment, we might need to talk about your methodology. And your budget. And maybe your pride.
What You Actually Buying When You Buy a Hobby
Listen. I sell challenging jigsaw puzzles for adults at this counter. I got the thousand-piece nightmare landscapes, I got the all-black gradient nonsense, I got the ones that look easy and then reveal themselves to be the hardest jigsaw puzzles for adults ever printed. Somebody always buy one, take it home, come back three weeks later looking tired. I love it.
And people buy them. Not because they think it gonna reverse cognitive decline. They buy them because they like doing puzzles.
That enough.
You want to sit at your table for three hours and put together a picture of a cottage you will never visit? Do that. Your hands is busy, your phone is across the room, you solving a little problem that got a real answer. It pleasant. It scratch an itch. It the same reason people play solitaire or organize they spice rack or clean out a junk drawer at eleven at night when they should be sleep.
But it ain't brain training. Training imply you building something that transfer to another area. You get better at puzzles. You don't get better at remembering where you put your keys. You just mad about it in a different room now.
The adult jigsaw puzzle hobby is a hobby. Hobbies is good. They don't gotta also be medicine.
The Nine-Person Problem
Here the thing that get me. The Jigsawdio study measured real outcomes. They used real tools. The people who participated probably did feel better. Depression going down is a real result, and I ain't dismissing that.
But nine people is not enough to build a conclusion on. It barely enough to build a card game on. You know how many people show up to a Friday night draft some weeks? More than nine. We got better sample sizes in the back room on a slow Tuesday.
The researchers said the findings was promising and that this technology-based puzzle program could be added to the inventory of innovative interventions. That a whole lot of hedge words. Promising mean maybe. Could be added mean we ain't saying you should, we just saying it possible. Inventory mean we put it on a list and then we all went home.
They ran a pilot study. Pilots is supposed to be small. That the whole point. You test the idea before you spend real money on a real trial. But a pilot study don't prove nothing except that the bigger study worth doing. And somehow we talking about it like it already answered the question. Like nine people settled it and we can all move on.
What We Actually Know
The studies we got show that people who do puzzles report enjoying puzzles. Groundbreaking.
They show that structured activity with music and personal meaning might improve mood in people with dementia, at least for the hour they doing it. They show that gamified tasks can measure attention, maybe as good as a paper test, if you got the sample size to back it up.
They do not show that puzzles make you smarter, sharper, or better at anything except puzzles. They do not show that your brain is getting trained. They do not show long-term benefits that outlast the activity itself.
If you like puzzles, do puzzles. They cheap, they quiet, they don't need a subscription, and you can do them at your own table without explaining yourself to nobody. That worth twenty-two dollars right there.
But if you buying them because somebody told you they gonna prevent cognitive decline, you buying a story that nine people and some pigeons cannot support.
Do it because it nice. Not because it gonna save you.
