LEGO Spatial Skills Development: Bricks Beat Worksheets Every Time

Four hundred and seventy-eight children, age six to eight, got handed a mental rotation task and a set of gear problems. The ones who could spin a shape around in they head and land it right also solved mechanical puzzles with fewer moves and better outcomes. Not a little better. A lot better. The study, published in 2025 in The British Journal of Developmental Psychology, found that spatial skills were associated with solution quality at a beta of point-two-seven to point-three-nine, depending on the task, and with parsimony at a beta of negative point-one-six. That second number means fewer wasted steps. That means efficiency. And you know what builds that skill? LEGO spatial skills development. Structured brick construction. The thing your living room floor is currently covered in and you keep stepping on at two in the morning.

Now look.

This ain't about being smart in general. This is about one specific cognitive ability making another specific cognitive ability better. The kid who can mentally rotate an object is also the kid who can solve a gear problem with the fewest moves. That is not magic. That is transfer. And it matters, because spatial reasoning is one of the strongest predictors of success in science, technology, engineering and math. Stronger than verbal skills. Stronger than a lot of things we spend more time measuring. Stronger than the ability to sit still during standardized testing, which is what we actually reward.

They Put Eye Cameras On Children and Learned Something

A separate piece of research, this one out of 2023 in the Journal of Science Education and Technology, followed thirty-one kids through six months of robotics activities. Robotics education is just expensive LEGO with a motor, let's be honest. Thirty-dollar bricks that beep. But they tracked these children with cognitive assessments AND eye-tracking, which is a camera that watches where you looking and for how long. Visuospatial working memory improved. Logical and abstract reasoning improved. And the eye-tracking data showed the kids getting faster at processing the information in front of them. They was more focused. They was scanning less and landing more. That is building blocks geometry learning happening in real time, with the receipts.

The parents said the same thing. They children was more focused comparing to six months ago. And the kids? The kids said it felt like playing a game. Which it was. But the game was teaching them to hold a three-dimensional shape in they head, rotate it, predict what it gonna look like from a different angle, and then TEST that prediction by snapping two pieces together. That loop, setup to test to feedback, that is how you build mental rotation practice with LEGO without anybody having to say the words 'mental rotation' out loud. The child thinks they building a castle. The brain knows better.

What 'Loose Parts' Actually Means and Why Half Y'all Doing It Wrong

Now, before anybody gets excited and dumps a bin of blocks on the floor and calls it pedagogy, let me tell you something. A 2023 review in the Journal of Intelligence went through all the studies on loose parts play, which is educator-speak for 'objects that ain't pre-assembled'. Blocks, sticks, boxes, fabric, anything a child can combine and recombine. The review is clear: loose parts play supports cognitive development, including executive function, problem-solving and reasoning. But the BEST outcomes came from activities that had structure. A goal. A model to match. A problem to solve.

Not chaos. Guided discovery.

That is the difference between a child moving blocks around aimlessly for twenty minutes and a child working through brick construction math skills without knowing that is what they doing. The structure is the teacher. The feedback is immediate. You built it wrong? It fall over. You built it right? It stand up and look like the picture. No worksheet required. No sticker chart. Just gravity and pride.

The Stereotype Problem That Wasn't There

One more study, because it matters and because it surprised everybody. Fifty-two preschool girls, age five to six and three-quarters, took a mental rotation test and a test measuring implicit gender stereotypes about spatial ability. The researchers expected to find that girls who had stronger stereotypes linking boys to spatial skills would perform worse on the rotation task. That is what prior research suggested. That is what the hypothesis was.

And they did not find it. At all.

In fact, they found the OPPOSITE: girls with stronger implicit associations linking boys to spatial ability had HIGHER accuracy on the mental rotation task. The relationship between stereotypes and performance? Not there. The study, published in 2025 in Frontiers in Psychology, is careful to say this do not mean stereotypes don't matter. It means the story is more complicated than we thought, and the impact, if any, in early childhood is not clear. But it also means that if you hand a five-year-old girl a set of spatial reasoning construction sets and let her build, she gonna build. The stereotype ain't stopping her yet. So get her the bricks before somebody tells her she ain't supposed to be good at this.

What This Means at the Table and On Your Floor

Here's what I tell folk when they asking me how do building blocks help with geometry: the block IS the geometry. A two-by-four LEGO brick is a rectangular prism. Stack two of them and you learning about volume. Rotate one ninety degrees and you learning about orientation. Try to connect two pieces that don't fit and you learning about constraints. The child is not thinking 'I am learning geometry'. The child is thinking 'I am building a spaceship'. But the spaceship only works if the geometry works, so the geometry gets learned whether anybody names it or not.

And that parsimony number from the first study? That negative point-one-six? That is what we talking about when we say a child 'sees the solution'. They ain't guessing and checking forever. They holding the problem in they head, they rotating the pieces mentally, they landing on the simplest path, and then they executing it. That skill transfers. To math homework. To packing a bag. To figuring out if the couch gonna fit through the door before you start pushing. To every argument you ever had about whether something gonna fit in the trunk.

If you looking for the best LEGO sets for spatial skills, I'm gonna tell you the same thing I tell the folk who come in here asking: don't buy the one with the fewest pieces. Buy the one with a GOAL. A model. A picture on the box. Something they gotta match. That is where the learning is. Let them follow the instructions twice, then let them freestyle. That is the structure and then the transfer. That is the lesson and then the proof they learned it.

Twenty-two dollars says your kid learns more from one good build than from an hour on a worksheet. And the four studies I just walked you through say I'm right.
