I went looking for human trials on myrtle leaf supplement and hearing. I found rat kidneys, dead ticks, and a yeast biofilm study.
Nobody measured ears.
The Kidney Study That Started This Mess
Researchers at a Saudi pharmaceutical lab gave rats gentamicin, an antibiotic that destroys kidneys if you use enough of it. Then they gave other rats an aqueous methanolic extract of Psidium cattleianum aerial parts at 800 milligrams per kilogram daily for fourteen days. That plant is in the Myrtaceae family. Myrtle is in the Myrtaceae family.
This is how supplement marketing begins.
The extract group had better kidney numbers. Blood urea nitrogen dropped 45 percent. Creatinine dropped 57 percent. Oxidative stress markers improved. Histology looked better under a microscope. The study listed ninety tentatively identified metabolites, including fifty-one flavonoids. Myrtle extract polyphenols were present. Kidney protection was measured.
Ears were not mentioned.
You can test the same plant family in different organs and get different results. That is how bodies work. A thing that helps a rat kidney survive antibiotic damage is not automatically a thing that helps a human cochlea hear a doorbell. The researchers wrote that the extract is promoted as an alternative remedy for controlling nephrotoxicity. They did not write anything about hearing.
Someone else did that later, in a different building, probably while looking at a marketing budget.
What Natural Ear Health Support Actually Means
It means the label writer had to put something on the bottle.
It does not mean a clinical trial measured decibels before and after myrtle. If you search for where to buy myrtle leaf capsules, you get results that say hearing wellness supplement in the product title. If you search PubMed for myrtle and hearing, you get nothing. If you search PubMed for Myrtaceae and cochlea, you get studies on other plants, none of them myrtle.
That gap is the entire supplement industry in one paragraph.

The second study I found tested 108 plant extracts from the Brazilian Cerrado against Candida albicans in planktonic and biofilm forms. Eighteen extracts showed antifungal activity. Some were Myrtaceae. The study used molecular networking and annotated sixty putative compounds, including flavonoids and triterpenoids.
They measured yeast death. Not sound perception.
The third study tested Eugenia pyriformis leaf extracts, another Myrtaceae, against Leishmania amazonensis promastigotes and amastigotes. The summer-collected leaf extract had an IC50 that induced cell cycle arrest and necrosis in the parasite. UHPLC-MS revealed that flavonoids and terpenoids were predominant in the active fractions.
Useful if you have leishmaniasis. Not relevant if you are shopping for natural ear health support.
The fourth study tested Syzygium aromaticum bud extract as an acaricide against Hyalomma dromedarii, a camel tick. The extract caused 100 percent mortality in engorged females after thirty-five days at high concentration. GC-MS detected eugenol, eugenol acetate, and fructofuranose. It also found alkaloids, flavonoids, phenolic compounds, tannins and terpenoids.
That is clove, not myrtle, but it is in the same family and it killed ticks.
It did not measure cochlear hair cells.
What You Actually Bought
You bought a bottle of polyphenols that performed well in a kidney injury model, in rats, when the injury was caused by a specific aminoglycoside antibiotic that you probably are not taking. You also bought the internet search results for best myrtle polyphenol supplement, which exist because other people searched for it, which they did because someone wrote ear wellness on a label.
The compounds are real. LC-ESI-TOF-MS does not lie. Flavonoids, phenolic acids, tannins, terpenoids: they are all in there. They have antioxidant activity and they modulate inflammatory pathways in the contexts where they were tested.
None of those contexts was a human ear.
I am not saying myrtle extract does nothing. I am saying nobody measured the thing the bottle says it is for. That is not the same as proof it does not work. It is proof that nobody checked. The gap between those two things is wide enough to fit a whole industry.
What It Would Take to Know
A trial. Humans with measurable hearing differences at baseline. A treatment group on standardised myrtle leaf extract for ear support at a dose that someone defended in writing. A control group on placebo. Audiometry before, during, and after.
Enough people to detect a difference if one exists.
Then you could say whether it works. Right now we have rat kidneys and the phrase supports healthy auditory function, which is the grammar of someone who cannot say what the thing does because nobody proved it does anything.
Myrtle grows in Mediterranean climates. It has been used in traditional medicine for respiratory issues, diarrhoea, and skin problems. Some of those uses have preliminary support in animal or cell models. Hearing is not one of them. If you are looking at a myrtle leaf supplement because you want your ears to work better, you are making a decision based on a hypothesis that someone skipped testing.
That hypothesis might be correct.
It also might be a bottle of rat kidney data wearing an ear label.
The studies are real. The flavonoids are real. The leap from kidney protection in a rodent gentamicin model to human cochlear preservation is not real. It is wishful extrapolation sold in capsule form. That is not science. That is marketing that wandered away from the data and started a new life selling hope to people who searched for myrtle extract hearing health on Google at two in the morning.
I read four studies. None of them measured what the bottle says the supplement is for.
