You typed 'where to buy perilla leaf oil' into a search bar, the internet showed you a perilla oil supplement with five stars and a paragraph about ancient wellness, and now you are here because something about that paragraph felt like it was written by a bot who learned English from a brochure.
Good instinct.
Let me tell you what actually exists in the published record: four rodent studies, one livestock trial, a handful of topical dermatology experiments, and zero clinical data in any language a cardiologist would call evidence.
What Perilla Oil Supplement Research Actually Measured
The file on perilla frutescens oil is thin, and every entry has fur. Rats on high-fat diets. Mice in cigarette smoke. Lambs whose rumens got sampled. Impressive if you are shopping for a hamster, less helpful if you are the one swallowing the gel cap.
In a 2026 trial published in Nutrients, researchers fed Sprague-Dawley rats a high-fat diet, then dosed half of them with perilla seed oil at 10 grams per kilogram of body weight per day. That is not a serving suggestion, mijo. That is their whole lunch. The cholesterol dropped, the HDL went up, the liver looked better under the microscope, and the rats lived.
What it proves about the bottle in your hand: almost nothing, because you are not a 300-gram rodent and your doctor is not dosing you by the kilogram.
A second team, publishing in Food Science & Nutrition, put mice in a chamber and made them breathe cigarette smoke extract once a week for four weeks. Then they gavaged them with perilla oil at a low dose of 123 milligrams per day or a high dose of 246. The inflammation went down. The alveolar enlargement improved. Eosinophil counts dropped.
The mouse weighed about 25 grams. You weigh three thousand times that. The dose that worked in the mouse would scale to roughly 30 grams a day in a human, if scaling worked, which it does not, because mice are not small humans and cigarette smoke extract is not the same as twenty years of Marlboros.

Perilla Oil vs Fish Oil, if Anyone Had Compared Them
Nobody has. The question you are asking does not have a study behind it. What exists is this: perilla seed oil is about 60 percent alpha-linolenic acid, an omega-3 fatty acid your body can theoretically convert into EPA and DHA, the long-chain forms that fish oil delivers directly. The conversion rate in humans is somewhere between 'poor' and 'are you kidding me', depending on your genetics, your diet, and whether the researcher writing the review had money from the fish industry.
If you are vegan, an alpha linolenic acid supplement is your best move and perilla beats flax on stability. If you eat fish twice a week, you are already ahead of the bottle. If you are asking because an influencer said seed oils are poison, log off and go outside.
The Topical Studies Exist, and They Are Mice Again
A 2026 paper in the International Journal of Pharmaceutics developed a perilla oil nanoemulsion and rubbed it on mice with imiquimod-induced psoriasis. The study reported reduced erythema, slowed keratinocyte proliferation, and downregulation of the Wnt signaling pathway visible on RNA sequencing.
Claro, but it is a nanoemulsion you cannot buy, applied to mouse skin for a condition induced by a drug.
Another group combined perilla-derived vesicles with probiotic lysates, measured elastin and collagen production in a dish, saw an 87.9 percent increase in elastin and a 61.4 percent bump in Type I collagen, and published it as a 'triple-action strategy' for atopic dermatitis. The dish is not your face. The strategy is not a product. The dermo-cosmetic industry writes like this when the clinical trial has not happened yet.
Best Perilla Oil Brand Depends on What You Think It Does
If you are buying it for the alpha-linolenic acid content, buy the one that lists the ALA percentage on the label, stores it in a dark glass bottle, and does not cost more than flax oil unless it explains why. Perilla oxidizes faster than most seed oils. If it has been sitting on the shelf since the previous administration, it is rancid, and rancid oil is not a supplement, it is a waste of thirty dollars.
If you are buying it because a trial showed it lowered cholesterol, you are buying it based on rat data, and the dose the rats received would translate to drinking the bottle. If you are buying it because someone said it is anti-inflammatory, the studies that measured inflammation measured it in rodents, livestock, and skin cells in a dish, and none of them published a follow-up titled 'We Tried It On Humans And Here Is What Happened.'
That follow-up does not exist. The best perilla oil brand is the one that does not lie about that.
Perilla Frutescens Supplement Dosage: Borrowed From Mice
The bottles say 1000 milligrams once or twice a day, and that number comes from extrapolating rodent doses, rounding to a number that fits in a soft gel, and hoping it is close enough to do something without doing harm. No human trial has established a therapeutic dose because no human trial has established a therapeutic effect.
The rat dose was ten grams per kilogram. You are not a rat. The mouse dose was 246 milligrams for a 25-gram animal. You are not a mouse. The lamb dose was measured in feed inclusion percentages and the endpoint was rumen bacteria, which you do not have unless something has gone very wrong.
If you take perilla oil, you are participating in an experiment with a sample size of one, no control group, and no lab monitoring your lipid panel. That is not a criticism. That is just what buying a supplement based on animal data actually is.
What The Studies Do Prove
Perilla seed oil is one of the richest known plant sources of alpha-linolenic acid. It modulates inflammatory markers in rats, protects lung tissue in smoke-exposed mice, improves psoriasis scores in a topical mouse model, shifts gut microbiota in lambs, and contains no detectable toxic metals when cold-pressed properly. All of that is true.
None of it tells you what happens when you take 1000 milligrams a day for six months. The study measuring that outcome has not been published, funded, or designed. It might be happening right now in a lab in Asia. It might never happen, because running a human trial is expensive and perilla oil is a generic commodity nobody can patent.
The best perilla oil supplement studies currently available were performed on animals that do not pay for their own bloodwork. That is the state of the evidence. Ya estuvo.
