The pterocarpus marsupium supplement sitting on the shelf came from a tree in India.
The tree is real.
The human trials are not.
Pterocarpus marsupium is called the Indian kino tree. People harvest the heartwood, grind it up, sell it as blood sugar support. The marketing says it has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for centuries. That part is true. What the marketing does not say is that nobody ran a controlled trial on an actual person with actual blood sugar.
They tested it on dishes.
What Got Measured in a Dish
In 2017, researchers in India tested an alcoholic extract of pterocarpus heartwood against free radicals, advanced glycation end-products, and an enzyme called aldose reductase. They used test tubes. The extract inhibited glycation at an IC50 of 55 micrograms per milliliter, blocked sorbitol accumulation at 151 micrograms per milliliter, and inhibited aldose reductase at 196 micrograms per milliliter.
Those are numbers.
They are test-tube numbers.
The study did not involve a pancreas. It involved dishes on a counter in a lab. When you read "the extract showed antioxidant potential," what that means is it did what antioxidants do when you put them next to free radicals in a controlled environment with no digestive system in the way. That is not the same as lowering someone's fasting glucose. That is chemistry happening without a person.
The researchers measured total phenolic content, total flavonoid content, DPPH scavenging activity, hydrogen peroxide scavenging, nitric oxide inhibition, superoxide radical scavenging, and reducing power. All of those things happened. None of them happened inside a human being taking pterocarpus marsupium supplement capsules with breakfast.
The compound could have asked to meet an actual pancreas. It did not.

What the Reviews Actually Say
Two other studies mention pterocarpus marsupium. They are review papers. A 2013 paper in the Journal of Diabetes Research listed it alongside six other plants "used for the management of diabetic conditions." A 2007 paper in the Journal of Clinical Biochemistry and Nutrition did the same. Both reviews noted that traditional medicine systems in India include the plant. Both acknowledged that herbal formulations are preferred in some populations due to cost and perceived safety.
Neither paper tested the tree on a person.
A mention in a review is not a study. It is a mention. The 2013 review said the goal was to provide "a starting point for future studies aimed at isolation, purification, and characterization of bioactive antidiabetic compounds." That sentence means the studies have not been done yet. You do not write "starting point" about something that already finished.
That is like calling your driveway the launch pad.
The Part Nobody Ran
There is no published human glucose tolerance test for pterocarpus marsupium supplement. Nobody recruited 150 adults with prediabetes, gave half of them the extract and half a placebo, and measured hemoglobin A1C every month for twelve weeks. Nobody tracked fasting glucose. Nobody compared the supplement to metformin or to sitting still for three months doing nothing.
The studies that exist measured what happens in a dish.
The studies that would matter do not exist.
This is common. A plant gets used traditionally. Researchers test the extract on cells or enzymes and find activity. Then they write "further studies in humans are warranted" and stop. The human trial costs money. The test tube study costs less. The industry can sell the capsules either way, so the expensive part does not happen.
If you look up pterostilbene, one of the compounds people talk about when they talk about this tree, you will find the same gap. The bark shows activity in lab assays. Nobody gave it to a person and checked their blood sugar six hours later.
The molecule is still waiting for its appointment.
Natural Doesn't Mean Proven
You can buy pterocarpus marsupium supplement powder. You can find it in capsules. The product exists. The evidence does not keep up.
The heartwood contains pterostilbene, epicatechin, and other phenolic compounds. In test-tube conditions at concentrations between 25 and 400 micrograms per milliliter, those molecules scavenge free radicals and inhibit enzymes tied to diabetic complications. That part has been measured. What has not been measured is whether taking the supplement changes anything in a person who swallows it.
Tradition is not data.
A test tube is not a pancreas.
A mention in a review paper is not a clinical trial.
The 2017 study concluded that the extract "showed prominent antioxidant, antiglycation property" and suggested "a beneficial role in reducing or delaying diabetic complications." That is careful language. It does not say the pterocarpus marsupium supplement works in humans. It says the dish results look promising and someone should test people next.
Nobody did.
If you are comparing traditional herbs for blood sugar, the comparison comes down to which ones have human trials and which ones have test tubes. Some plants have both. This one has test tubes, mentions, and a long history of use. It does not have the part where researchers gave it to 200 people and tracked their glucose for three months.
That is the gap. The tree is fine. The tradition is real. The molecules do things in a dish.
What pterocarpus marsupium supplement does not have is a published trial showing that a human taking it experienced a measured change in blood sugar, insulin sensitivity, or any diabetes-related outcome compared to someone taking a placebo.
You can still buy it. The market does not wait for trials.
But if you are looking for evidence, what you will find is a 2017 test-tube study, two review papers that mention the plant in a list, and a whole lot of products that say "support" instead of "lowers."
Support is not a verb. It is a disclaimer with a shelf.
