Rhaponticum carthamoides is a Siberian herb with a name that looks like someone sneezed on a keyboard.
The plant does not care.
It grows in the steppe, which is a cold grassland where complaining about the weather would take all day, so nobody does. Folk healers have used it for centuries to treat neurasthenia, kidney deficiency, lumbago, and gastrointestinal disorders. A 2026 systematic review notes that traditional practitioners also used Rhaponticum species for rheumatoid arthritis. Those are all real conditions. The plant has also been recommended for something called "clearing heat," which I guess means different things depending on whether you are in Siberia or a dessert kitchen.
The rhaponticum carthamoides supplement market exists because the plant contains compounds called ecdysteroids, particularly one named 20-hydroxyecdysone. Ecdysteroids are phytosteroids. That means they are steroids made by plants, which is different from the kind made by your liver or the kind that gets baseball players suspended.
What Researchers Found When They Actually Tested The Bottles
In 2026, a team developed a liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry method to measure ecdysteroids in dietary supplements. They tested thirteen commercial products labeled as containing rhaponticum carthamoides extract. Several of those products claimed to be standardized to 80 or 95 percent ecdysterone.
The measured amounts of 20-hydroxyecdysone ranged from below the limit of detection to approximately 50 milligrams per capsule. One non-standardized product contained around 105 milligrams per capsule. It did not say it would. That is the supplement equivalent of underpromising.
The researchers also found variability in turkesterone content among products marketed as standardized extracts. Turkesterone is another ecdysteroid. The name sounds like a retirement community in Arizona, but it is a molecule.
Same study, different finding: spinach, quinoa, kaniwa, and asparagus all contain phytoecdysteroids. You could skip the Siberian herb and eat a vegetable. The vegetable will not have a standardization claim either, but at least it will be consistent about it.
The Part About Muscle, Bone, And Hormones That Is Not A Promise
A 2026 systematic review cataloged 217 metabolites isolated from Rhaponticum species. The list includes steroids, flavonoids, sesquiterpenoids, thiophenes, and triterpenoids. That is a lot of metabolites for one plant. It has been busy.
The same review summarized pharmacological studies showing antihypertensive, hypolipidemic, immunomodulatory, neuroprotective, antitumor, hepatoprotective, cardioprotective, anti-inflammatory, and anti-influenza effects in laboratory models and animal trials. Those studies did not measure what happens in a human being going through menopause or trying to keep muscle mass after 40. They measured enzyme activity in a dish, blood pressure in a rat, or liver enzymes in a mouse.
There is no published human trial of rhaponticum carthamoides for muscle retention, bone density, or hormone balance during midlife transition. The phrase "adaptogenic herb women" gets searched a lot. The studies have not caught up to the search bar.
If you see a rhaponticum carthamoides supplement marketed as rhaponticum menopause support or natural hormone balance support, the marketing is ahead of the data. The data is still in the steppe, checking enzyme pathways.
What This Means If You Were Thinking About Buying It
Rhaponticum carthamoides is not approved by the FDA for any medical use. It is sold as a dietary supplement under a regulatory framework that does not require efficacy trials before the bottle goes on the shelf. The label may say "standardized." The lab results may say "undetectable." Both of those can be true at the same time without anybody breaking a rule.
The traditional uses are real. Centuries of Siberian folk medicine are not a clinical trial, but they are not nothing. The problem is that "supports" is not a measurable verb and "muscle retention" is not a standardized endpoint when the product you are buying might not contain the compound the traditional preparation did.
If you want rhaponticum carthamoides where to buy, you can find it. Look for third-party testing and a company that will show you a certificate of analysis. Do not believe a percentage on the front of the label. The researchers who tested thirteen products did not believe it either, and they had a mass spectrometer.
The plant is also called Leuzea carthamoides. That is the same plant. Taxonomists renamed it, and now it has a closest phylogenetic relationship to itself. I read that in a chloroplast genome study. The study did not explain why the name changed or whether the plant was consulted.
You could also eat more spinach. It contains ecdysteroids. Nobody has standardized it to 95 percent of anything, but it shows up when you test it, which is more than some of the bottles do.
