The label says protein. It does not say arsenic. Not because there is none, but because nobody asked them to mention it.
Arsenic accumulates in rice, in kelp, in hijiki, in arame. It shows up in the powder, in the capsule, in the daily scoop you are adding to the smoothie. And the bottle offers you nothing: no test result, no batch number tied to published data, no comparison to anything, no way to know if rice protein arsenic levels in this brand run lower than that one or if anybody tested at all. The rice protein aisle is clean and bright and utterly silent on the subject of what else came along for the ride. Silence in retail is a strategy, not an oversight.
Does rice protein have arsenic? Yes. The plant pulls it from soil and water, stores it in the grain, and it survives processing. How much depends on where the rice grew, which variety, what the manufacturer did or did not remove. The number moves by brand, by batch, by harvest. It is not zero and it is not labeled. If a supplement company will not print the number, assume the number is not a selling point.
Rice Protein Arsenic Levels the Industry Will Not Name
A 2023 study out of Sweden tested a wide range of plant foods making their way into the European diet, including rice protein and other products pitched as sustainable, modern, clean. The researchers measured arsenic, cadmium, lead, mercury, and about seventy other elements. Rice showed up with arsenic. Teff showed up with arsenic. Kelp, chia, gluten-free products marketed to people trying to eat better, all carried measurable levels of something. The modern wellness aisle, tested honestly, reads like a periodic table with ambitions.
The study did not name brands. It measured food categories, the sort of aggregate data that tells you the risk exists but not which package on which shelf is carrying it. The conclusion noted that a shift toward more plant-based eating is worth doing and also worth watching, because the toxicology follows the diet. You cannot move your meals toward rice protein and seaweed and assume the contamination risk stayed behind with the animals. The poison is polite. It does not care about your values.
Rice protein arsenic content varies by source, by supplier, by the soil the crop grew in and the processing the manufacturer chose. Some companies test every batch. Some test once and call it done. Some buy from a supplier who says they test, which is different from testing the way a photo of a sandwich is different from lunch, and some do not bring it up unless you ask. And if you ask, they may show you a certificate of analysis from a lab you have never heard of, formatted in a way you cannot compare to anyone else's number, covering a batch that shipped four months ago. It is transparency designed to look like transparency while doing none of the work.

Kelp Supplement Heavy Metals Nobody Prints on the Bottle
A 2021 study in Portugal tested fifteen kelp and algae supplements sold to the public. The researchers used X-ray fluorescence, a method sensitive enough to catch what is actually in there. Arame, hijiki, and one kelp product all measured arsenic at sixty micrograms per gram or higher. Hijiki in particular has been flagged repeatedly for inorganic arsenic, the version that actually harms you, not the organic forms your body clears. Sixty micrograms per gram is not trace. That is присутствие with intent.
The bottles did not say. The labels listed iodine, sometimes calcium, sometimes a vague phrase about trace minerals, which is technically accurate the way a crime scene is technically a workplace. A few mentioned testing for purity. Not one printed a number for arsenic, not one pointed to a database where you could look it up. The study noted "lack of accurate regulations and control" and suggested consumers be cautious about indiscriminate use, which is academic phrasing for: you are on your own here, abeg, nobody is stopping this.
Some samples measured lead high enough to be a genuine problem if someone followed the dosing on the bottle. The researchers flagged sea spaghetti, arame, hijiki, wakame. These are not fringe products. They sit on the shelf at the health store, they turn up in subscription boxes, they come recommended by the influencer who also sells them, whose affiliate link pays whether or not the seaweed was tested. Are rice protein supplements safe to take? Depends which one, from where, tested when, by whom, and whether you believe the answer. Same answer for kelp, same silence on the label.
Supplement Arsenic Contamination Risk With No Testing Transparency
Testing transparency would mean this: the manufacturer names the lab, posts the results, updates them by batch, lets you compare one brand to another without calling customer service and waiting three days for someone to email you a PDF with the company logo at the top and no independent verification. That is not what happens. What happens is the manufacturer pays for a test if they feel like it, files it internally, maybe mentions it in marketing materials if the number looks good, and you get to decide whether to believe them. Trust is the business model. Trust is also free.
The studies exist. Researchers have been measuring arsenic in rice protein, kelp, spirulina, chlorella, all the green powders and sea vegetables that entered the wellness vocabulary in the last fifteen years. The data is in journals, behind paywalls, formatted for other scientists. It is not on the bottle. The gap between what science knows and what a shopper can find out before buying is not an information problem. It is a policy choice, and the people who benefit from the gap wrote the policy.
Supplement brands that test for arsenic do exist. Some publish the results on their websites. Some use third-party verification, the kind where an outside lab with no financial stake runs the analysis and posts a seal you can click through. That costs money, it takes time, it opens the company up to comparison, and it is completely optional. The manufacturer who does not bother is not breaking a rule. They are just declining to answer a question nobody made them ask. Voluntary compliance is a lovely phrase. It means exactly what it sounds like.
Which Supplements Test for Heavy Metals (and How You Would Know)
You would know by looking. A company serious about heavy metal testing does not make you ask. They put the test results where you can see them: on the product page, in a downloadable report, with the batch number and the date and the lab name attached. If the information requires a phone call, that is a choice. If it requires trust, that is a business model. If it requires a lawyer, that is an admission.
The 2024 review on arsenic speciation in marine organisms laid out the detection methods in full academic dress: inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, the hyphenated techniques that can tell inorganic from organic arsenic, the extraction protocols that get an accurate number from a complicated food matrix. The science is mature. The labs exist. The testing is available. The barrier is not technical. It is economic and it is voluntary, which in this industry means rare, which in plain English means most companies are not doing it.
Rice protein arsenic levels matter because the dose accumulates. You are not eating it once. You are adding it to the smoothie every morning, hitting the recommended serving, possibly doubling it if you are using it as a primary protein source. The amount in one serving might be fine. The amount over two years of daily use is a different sentence, and nobody is required to help you do that math. The studies measure what is in the food. You measure how much of the food you eat. The intersection is your problem, the liability is yours, and the company that sold it to you has moved on.
Kelp is worse because the variability is wider. Seaweed pulls metals from water the way rice pulls them from soil, and the ocean is not clean everywhere, is it not. The kelp harvested off one coast will carry a different load than kelp from another, and the supplement you bought last year may not match the one you buy next month even if the brand is the same. Batch-to-batch testing would catch that. It would also cost money every time, cut into the margin, require honesty on a schedule, so it does not happen unless the company considers transparency a selling point instead of an expense.
The question is not whether these supplements are poisoning you. The question is whether you can find out if they are, before you buy them, using information the manufacturer published rather than information you have to beg for. And the answer, for most brands on most shelves, is no. That answer should bother you more than it does.
