Scrophularia ningpoensis is a figwort, which is to say it is a plant in the family Scrophulariaceae, native to parts of China, and not remotely related to anything you have heard of. One imagines the marketing department had to work rather hard to make that sound like a health breakthrough, but they managed, and here we are, browsing a scrophularia ningpoensis supplement aisle that did not exist five years ago and wondering if this is progress.
The plant produces small dark flowers that bees visit with what one assumes is professional obligation rather than enthusiasm.
The resulting honey has antibacterial properties.
What The Figwort Extract Lung Health Research Actually Measured
In 2022, researchers collected eight types of honey sourced from medicinal plants native to China, tested them against several bacterial strains in vitro, and found that honey from Scrophularia ningpoensis exhibited the strongest antibacterial activity. The minimum inhibitory concentrations ranged from seven point eight one to one hundred and twenty-five percent weight-to-volume, which the authors described as comparable to manuka honey, a claim that will surprise absolutely nobody who has paid seventeen dollars for a small jar of manuka honey and wondered what exactly they were paying for.
The researchers then tested the honey in mice with acute skin infections caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. After treatment with one hundred and twenty-five milligrams of figwort honey per ten grams of body weight, the bacterial load in the muscle tissue beneath the wounds decreased significantly. In mice infected with S. aureus, the study measured serum levels of tumor necrosis factor alpha, a marker of inflammation, which dropped by forty-five point three eight percent; in those infected with Pseudomonas aeruginosa, the levels dropped by fifty-one point seven five percent.
Whether the antibacterial effect was due to hydrogen peroxide, which all honey produces naturally, or to other compounds identified in the chemical analysis: adenosine, chavicol, four-methylcatechol, trehalose, palmitoleic acid and salidroside, remains unclear. The study suggested it might be both, or possibly neither, or perhaps something else entirely that was not measured.
One appreciates the honesty.

Traditional Chinese Medicine Figwort and the Ointment Problem
A 2023 review of Kampo herbal ointments used for wound healing in traditional Japanese medicine mentioned Scrophularia as one of several genera included in formulations alongside Angelica, Lithospermum, Curcuma, Phellodendron, Paeonia, Rheum, Rehmannia and Cinnamomum. The ointments were prepared by extracting crude drugs into a lipophilic base of sesame oil and beeswax, according to protocols that the authors described as not well standardised and rather sensitive to variations in plant material and extraction method.
The review noted that research on these ointments has not been well developed, due to what it called analytical difficulties encountered in biological and metabolomic analysis of lipophilic formulas. It did not specify what those difficulties were, but one imagines they involve the fact that analysing oily plant extracts is a miserable business that nobody wants to do, and so nobody has.
The review concluded that further research could contribute to a rationalisation of therapeutic uses.

Where The Scrophularia Respiratory Support Marketing Comes From
If you search for figwort respiratory support or figwort extract for respiratory wellness, you will find a great many product pages describing it as beneficial for lung health, mucous membrane support, immune function, and general respiratory wellness. What you will not find, anywhere in the published literature, is a human clinical trial that measured any of those outcomes.
The marketing appears to rest on two pillars: first, that Scrophularia has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for various purposes involving heat and inflammation, which is true but not the same as evidence of efficacy, and second, that the honey study demonstrated antimicrobial activity, which it did, but not in the respiratory tract, not in humans, and not with the plant extract that is being sold.
The distinction between honey made by bees visiting a flower and an extract of the plant itself is not a minor one, but the supplement industry has never been particularly troubled by such details.
What You Are Actually Buying When You Buy A Traditional Figwort Herbal Remedy Online
A scrophularia ningpoensis supplement is typically sold as a dried root extract, in capsules or powder form, with dosages ranging from three hundred to six hundred milligrams per day. The product pages will tell you it supports respiratory health, promotes healthy immune response, and may help maintain mucous membrane integrity, all of which are carefully worded to avoid making an actual claim.
None of this has been tested in a controlled human trial.
If you are looking for the best scrophularia ningpoensis supplement brand, the honest answer is that there is no data by which to judge one superior to another. You are choosing between manufacturers on the basis of their reputation for quality control and transparency, which is a reasonable thing to do, but it is not the same as choosing between products with demonstrated clinical efficacy.
The question of how to use figwort extract daily is similarly unanswered. The dosages currently sold are not based on human trials. They are based on traditional use, on extrapolation from other herbs, and on what fits comfortably into a capsule.
One might reasonably ask whether this constitutes a health product or simply a gesture in the direction of one.
Scrophularia Supplement Dosage and Benefits: The Reckoning
To summarise: researchers measured the antibacterial activity of honey from Scrophularia ningpoensis flowers in petri dishes and in mice with infected wounds. The honey worked about as well as manuka honey, which is to say it worked, but not in a way that tells us anything about oral supplementation, respiratory health, or human outcomes of any kind.
A review of traditional ointments mentioned Scrophularia as one ingredient among many in wound-healing formulas that have not been rigorously studied because nobody wants to analyse oily plant mixtures.
From this, the supplement industry has extrapolated a market for scrophularia supplements that you may purchase online, in standardised doses, for purposes that have not been tested.
It is not that the plant has no bioactive compounds. It almost certainly does. Nor is it impossible that future research might demonstrate meaningful effects in humans. It is simply that none of that research exists yet, and buying the supplement now is not the same as waiting for it.
One imagines the bees know this already.
