Somebody finally went and studied what every game store employee been watching for twenty years: take the individual scoreboard away and kids start acting right. Researchers at a university built a prototype tabletop game, sat down fourteen children aged six to eleven, ran five full gameplay sessions, recorded everything, and published the results in JMIR Serious Games in 2026. What they found was that shared victory board games, where everybody wins together or everybody loses together, produced verbal encouragement, strategy sharing, and mutual problem-solving without anybody telling the kids to do it. The design did the teaching. The researchers just wrote it down.
The game they built was called MeerPlay. Low-resolution prototype, nothing fancy. But the structure was specific: one shared player panel, conjoined actions to reach the goal, and a single dice roll everybody used together. No individual score. No 'you got fifteen points and she got twelve so you win and she loses.' Just: did we beat the challenge or did the challenge beat us?
That is a different psychological setup. The kids responded exactly how you would hope and exactly how the literature said they would.
What The Researchers Recorded When Nobody Was Keeping Score
The study team coded the sessions for collaborative behaviors. What they documented was this: the children engaged in verbal persuasion, meaning they encouraged each other out loud when somebody was stuck. They engaged in vicarious experience, meaning they watched each other succeed at a task and then believed they could do it too. And they problem-solved together, talking through strategy in real time, offering ideas without being prompted, adjusting plans as a group. The study called this environment 'mutual support.'
I call it what happens when the game makes your success depend on the person next to you instead of on beating them.
What that looked like in practice: one kid would roll the dice and three other kids would immediately start talking about what to do with that roll. Somebody would suggest a move. Somebody else would say 'wait, what if we do this instead?' A third kid would point at the board and work it out. Then they would all agree and take the action together. That cycle repeated the whole session. No adult facilitation. No teacher standing there saying 'now let's work as a team.' The structure of the game made collaboration the optimal strategy, so the kids collaborated.
The research team noted that as the sessions progressed, participants developed skills to overcome new challenges, performed gameplay actions they had not attempted before, and built confidence in their ability to handle the game's computational thinking tasks. That confidence came from succeeding together and from watching their peers succeed, which the literature identifies as a predictor of self-efficacy in STEM learning. That was the study's actual focus: how collaborative gameplay builds belief in your own ability to solve hard problems. The helping behaviors were the mechanism.
The self-efficacy was the outcome.

Why Cooperative Games Hit Different Than Partial Cooperation
Now let me tell you what this study was not. It was not about games where you cooperate sometimes and compete other times. It was not about games where you work in teams but the teams are trying to beat each other. It was not about games where you help each other in round one and then stab each other in round seven.
Those are fine games. I sell those games. But they do not produce the same behavior, and this research is showing you why.
When the victory condition is truly shared, meaning everybody wins or everybody loses, the optimal move and the prosocial move become the same move. You are not sacrificing your position to help somebody. You are improving your position by helping them. That alignment is load-bearing. A kid does not have to choose between winning and being kind. The game made those the same thing. And what the researchers observed, across all five sessions, was that once the kids understood that structure, they leaned into it hard.
Contrast that with a game where you are cooperating to build a thing but you each get individual points for your contribution and at the end one person wins. That is a different incentive structure. You will help, but only up to the point where helping costs you the win. You will share information, but maybe not your best information. You will collaborate, but you will also hedge. The team-based structure is there, but the individual victory condition undercuts it.
Kids pick up on that split in about four minutes, and they play accordingly.
What This Means For Family Game Night
If you are shopping for games where everyone wins together, the market is deeper now than it has ever been. Pandemic is the obvious one: you are disease researchers trying to stop four outbreaks before the world ends, and either the whole table wins or the whole table loses. Forbidden Island, same structure: you are treasure hunters on a sinking island, and you all escape or you all drown. Flashpoint: Fire Rescue, you are firefighters pulling people out of a burning building, and you save them all or the building collapses on everybody.
These are not niche titles. These are widely distributed, widely reviewed, and they have been on the shelf for years.
For younger kids, there is Hoot Owl Hoot, Outfoxed, Race to the Treasure. These are no elimination board games where a four-year-old and a nine-year-old can play at the same table and both feel like they contributed. The whole family working one problem. No kid sitting there watching everybody else play because they got knocked out in round two. That structure shows up in this research as producing not just better gameplay, but better post-game behavior, meaning the helping and encouragement did not stop when the game stopped.
And what matters if you are trying to build something in your house: the study ran five sessions. The collaborative behaviors got stronger each session, not weaker. The kids were learning a pattern. Play together, win together. Try again, adjust the strategy, succeed as a group.
That is repetition building a habit, and the habit they were building was mutual support under pressure. You can buy that in a box for thirty dollars, and it fits on a shelf.
The Thing The Study Could Not Measure But We See Anyway
This was a small study. Fourteen kids, qualitative analysis, one prototype game, no control group running a competitive version for comparison. The researchers stated plainly that this was the first iteration of a design science research process, meaning they were building the model, not proving causation. What they showed was that this design produced these behaviors in this sample.
What they did not show, because they did not measure it, was whether those behaviors transfer to other contexts or persist over time.
But I will tell you what I see. A family comes in, buys Pandemic, plays it six times. Then they come back in and the parents tell me the kids started helping each other with homework without being asked. Or they worked together to clean the basement. Or they solved some sibling problem that had been a fight for two years. And the parents want to know what is in the game.
What is in the game is a structure that made collaboration the winning move, and the kids generalized the lesson.
I cannot cite that. That is anecdotal. That is not data. But it happens enough that when I am recommending fun team games for family game night, I tell parents straight up: if you want your kids to work together on other stuff, put them in a situation where working together is how you win, and let them practice. This study is not proving that transfer, but it is documenting the behavior change inside the game, and that is the mechanism. Whether it transfers is a different research question, and somebody probably ought to run it.
What this paper did do, and did clearly, was lay out design principles for collaborative gameplay that produce mutual support. Shared player panel. Conjoined actions toward a common goal. Shared in-game elements. Shared dice-roll values to force real-time joint decision-making. That is a recipe. You can build a game with that recipe, or you can go buy one somebody already built, and what you are buying is a structure that teaches helping behavior by making it the optimal strategy.
The kids in this study figured that out fast. Your kids probably will too.
