Some mineral supplement blends list yttrium on the label. Yttrium is a rare earth element, atomic number 39, named after a Swedish village where someone found interesting rocks in 1787. The marketing language around yttrium supplements reads like a cover letter written by someone who has never met the candidate: supports bone health, supports cellular function, supports metabolic processes. Three verbs, zero commitments, no object for any of the sentences.
What you will not find anywhere in the published literature is a randomized controlled trial of yttrium supplementation in human beings.
Not one.
What We Know About Rare Earths, And Where We Know It From
Animal studies from the 1990s established that rare earth elements accumulate in bone and reticuloendothelial cells after environmental or experimental exposure. A 1996 review in Environmental Health Perspectives noted that the metabolism of rare earths shares features with aluminum: low intestinal absorption, rapid urinary excretion, slow tissue uptake, mostly in skeleton and reticuloendothelial cells. That paper synthesized three decades of occupational health data, mostly from miners. The exposures were industrial. The route was inhalation. The subjects were not taking a yttrium supplement with breakfast.
A 2023 study in Bioactive Materials tested magnesium alloys containing yttrium, holmium, erbium and lutetium (all rare earths) as biodegradable surgical implants in SD rats. The researchers embedded metal rods inside live animals and tracked what happened to the elements as the implants degraded. Metal elements were gradually excreted through the urinary and digestive systems, quote, showing no consistent accumulation in main organs. The paper framed this as good news for implant design, because the rare earths did not pile up in the liver or kidneys over the 12-week study period.
Gradually excreted. In SD rats. Over 12 weeks. From a rod implanted in the femur.
Which tells you something about surgical hardware but precisely nothing about daily oral dosing in a person holding a bottle they bought on the internet.
The Inhalation Data Is Not Reassuring Either
A 2026 review in Frontiers in Public Health summarized the respiratory risks of rare earth exposure in mining and industrial regions. Fine and ultrafine particles penetrate deeply into the distal lung, where they exhibit high biopersistence and limited clearance. Epidemiological evidence from workers in those regions suggested elevated internal rare earth burdens were associated with increased prevalence of respiratory symptoms and chronic lung diseases. At the molecular level, rare earths induced oxidative stress, immune and inflammatory dysregulation, and calcium homeostasis imbalance in experimental models.

That study was about people breathing dust in a mine or a processing plant for years. The exposure route, the particle size, the dose and the duration bear no resemblance to swallowing a trace mineral yttrium capsule. But it does establish that rare earths are not inert, that the body does not handle them well, and that persistent low-level exposure to this class of elements has been linked to measurable harm in real human populations.
Nobody has yet published the study that would tell you whether any of that applies to supplementation.
Does Yttrium Supplement Work? Wrong Question.
The question assumes there is a thing yttrium is supposed to do. The labels do not say. Vendors mention yttrium bone health in the same breath as seventeen other trace minerals, as though listing them in alphabetical order constitutes a mechanism. One supplier's website says yttrium supports cellular energy production. No citation, no proposed pathway, no explanation of which cells or what kind of energy or why those cells cannot produce it on their own.
It is like hiring a contractor who shows up with a toolbox, dumps it on your floor, and leaves without saying what any of the tools are for.
If you search PubMed for 'yttrium supplementation', you get papers on yttrium-90 radiotherapy for liver cancer (a targeted radiation treatment, not a nutritional intervention) and materials science studies on alloys. If you search for 'yttrium bone', you get geology papers about mineral deposits and one study on tooth enamel composition in which yttrium appears as a contaminant. If you search 'yttrium metabolism human', the top result is the 1996 review cited earlier, which opens by noting that toxicological data on rare earths are scant compared to other heavy metals.
That paper is 30 years old. The situation has not improved.
Is Yttrium Safe To Take Daily? Nobody Has Checked.
The rat implant study recorded no acute toxicity over 12 weeks. The inhalation studies recorded chronic harm in workers over years. Neither of those populations were healthy adults taking a yttrium mineral supplement at the dose printed on a bottle. No published trial has established a safe upper limit for oral yttrium intake in humans. No agency has set a tolerable daily intake. The Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act does not require efficacy data before a product goes to market, so a manufacturer can add yttrium to a blend, call it a rare earth element supplement, and sell it without ever proving the ingredient does anything or demonstrating that it does not cause harm.
The label lists an amount. That number is not connected to any outcome anyone has measured.
Where to buy yttrium supplement is easy to answer: online, in stores, in blends with names like 'Full Spectrum Minerals' or 'Trace Element Complex'. The bottle will tell you it supports this, enhances that, optimizes the other. It will not tell you that the entire evidence base for oral yttrium in humans could fit on the back of a business card with room left over for someone's coffee order.
Yttrium supplement dosage recommendations do not exist in the literature because nobody has run the studies that would generate them.
Which means every dose currently on the market was picked by someone who had no data, no guidance, and no consequences for being wrong.
Yttrium Supplement Benefits And Side Effects: A Short List
Benefits demonstrated in human trials: none.
Side effects documented in human supplementation studies: none, because there are no human supplementation studies.
What we do know is that rare earths as a class accumulate in bone and reticuloendothelial cells, persist in tissue, and induce oxidative stress in experimental models. A 2026 review in Frontiers in Public Health found that epidemiological evidence from mining and industrial regions suggested elevated internal rare earth burdens were associated with increased prevalence of respiratory symptoms and chronic lung diseases, including bronchitis and interstitial lung disease. We know that the body is not very good at clearing rare earths once they get in.
And we know that the industry selling yttrium supplements has not funded a single human trial to see what happens when you take it every day for a year.
That is the list.
