Bi Ba is unsulfured, which is a fact you don't appreciate until you find out most dried herbs get treated with sulfur just to look nice on a shelf. This one skipped that step.

What Bi Ba Actually Is

Bi Ba, also known as long pepper, is the dried fruit of Piper longum, a plant that has been part of traditional herbal practice for a very long time. MayWay and Plum Flower process it the old way, meaning no sulfur fumigation. That's the "unsulfured" part on the label. Most people read that word and move on. I read it and thought, so somewhere there's a sulfured version, and someone had to choose the other one on purpose. That's this one.

It looks a little like a tiny brown pinecone that gave up halfway through becoming a pinecone. That's not a knock. That's just what long pepper looks like, and it's been looking like that since before we had a word for "unsulfured."

Why People Use It

In traditional herbal use, Bi Ba is valued for supporting digestive comfort and helping maintain a healthy sense of warmth in the body. It's typically worked into herbal formulas rather than eaten on its own, kind of like how nobody eats a bay leaf straight, it just sits in the pot doing its job.

  • Supports digestive comfort as part of traditional herbal formulas
  • Helps maintain a healthy, balanced sense of internal warmth
  • Processed without sulfur fumigation, so what you get is the herb, not the herb plus a preservation shortcut
  • Sourced and prepared under Plum Flower's quality standards, which is a brand practitioners have relied on for decades

How It's Typically Used

This is a raw, unsulfured herb meant to be incorporated into decoctions or formulas, generally under the guidance of a qualified herbal practitioner. It is not a "grab a handful and go" situation. Long pepper doesn't work that way, and honestly neither does most cooking with actual pepper. You use a little, it does its thing, you don't build a snack out of it.

If you're already working with a practitioner on a formula that calls for Bi Ba, this is the unsulfured version they probably meant. If you're not sure what a decoction is, that's a fair place to start asking questions before you start measuring anything out.

The MayWay / Plum Flower Standard

Plum Flower has been a trusted name in traditional Chinese herbal preparations for a long time, and MayWay handles sourcing with an eye toward consistency and quality across batches. Unsulfured processing takes more care and costs more to do right, which is probably why the sulfured shortcut exists in the first place. This one didn't take it.
