Ku Gua is bitter melon, dried unsulfured, and it does not apologize for the name.

This is MayWay's Plum Flower Ku Gua, which is just the fruit of the bitter melon plant (Momordica charantia) sliced up and dried without sulfur, meaning nobody snuck a preservative in there to make it look prettier on the shelf. It looks like what it is. It smells like what it is. And what it is, is bitter. Aggressively, honestly bitter. In traditional Chinese herbal practice, that bitterness is kind of the whole point, it's categorized as a cooling herb, and people have been steeping it, cooking with it, and using it as part of daily wellness routines for a very long time. We didn't invent that. We just didn't mess it up either.

What "Unsulfured" Actually Means

A lot of dried herbs get treated with sulfur dioxide to keep the color bright and the shelf life long. It's a preservation shortcut. This Ku Gua skips it. That means the color is a little more honest (dull green to brown, not neon), and the flavor is fully intact, for better or worse. Mostly worse, if you're new to bitter melon. That's not a flaw, that's the product working as intended.

How People Use It

  • Traditionally simmered into teas or soups as part of a daily wellness routine
  • Used in TCM practices that support digestive comfort
  • Valued as part of formulas that support healthy blood sugar levels already in the normal range
  • Incorporated into routines that support a healthy inflammatory response

None of that means you eat a handful and expect fireworks. Herbal traditions built around Ku Gua treat it as a supporting player, not a solo act, usually combined with other herbs or used consistently over time as part of a broader approach to wellness. That's how it's been used for generations, and that's how we'd suggest thinking about it now.

Sourced and Handled With Some Respect

Plum Flower has been a name in the Chinese herbal space for a long time, and MayWay sources and processes these herbs with actual quality control instead of just tossing dried plant matter in a bag and hoping. This Ku Gua is minimally processed, unsulfured, and about as close to the raw traditional form as you're going to find without growing the vine yourself on a balcony somewhere, which, respectfully, is a lot of work for one bitter fruit.

If you're building out an herbal apothecary, working with a practitioner, or just curious about traditional bitter melon in its unadulterated form, this is that. Bitter, unbothered, and exactly what it says on the bag.
