Shan Zha is dried hawthorn fruit, sliced thin, sun dried, and left alone. No sulfur, no bleaching, no chemical fast pass through processing. Just fruit that got cut up and told to air out. It looks a little brown and a little sad compared to the sulfured stuff, which is the point. The good ones usually are.
In traditional Chinese herbal practice, Shan Zha has been used for a long, long time as a digestive helper, especially after the kind of meal where you ate more than you meant to and now you're just sitting there, regretting the portion size but not the decision. It's steeped or simmered, and it's one of those herbs that shows up specifically because somebody, somewhere, ate too much fatty food on purpose and needed backup.
What Unsulfured Actually Means
Sulfur fumigation is a common shortcut in dried herb processing. It keeps color bright and shelf life long, and it does this by introducing sulfur dioxide, which is not something you were trying to add to your tea. Unsulfured means the hawthorn was dried the old way, slower, plainer, and without the chemical assist. It's not flashy. It's just hawthorn being hawthorn, on its own time.
Why People Reach For It
- Supports digestive comfort, particularly around rich or heavier meals
- Promotes cardiovascular wellness as part of the fruit's traditional use
- Supports healthy digestion in general, not just the dramatic post-meal kind
- Unsulfured processing, so what you're steeping is closer to just... fruit
This is a bulk dried herb, meant for traditional preparation, not a flavored gummy situation. You simmer it, you steep it, you let it do the slow, unglamorous work that dried fruit slices have been doing in kitchens and apothecaries for centuries. It won't taste like dessert. It tastes like a tart, faintly fruity, faintly medicinal decision you made on purpose.
A Quick, Honest Note
MayWay and Plum Flower have been sourcing and processing traditional Chinese herbs for a long time, and the unsulfured line exists specifically for people who read ingredient labels and then keep reading past the ingredient. If that's you, this is the hawthorn for you. If you just wanted something red and dried to chew on, this will also technically work, but you're missing the point a little.
