Shan Zhu Yu is dried cornus fruit, unsulfured, so nothing extra came along for the ride.

This is Plum Flower's raw, whole-piece Shan Zhu Yu (Cornus officinalis fruit), the kind of ingredient you'd find in a traditional Chinese herbal pharmacy, not a smoothie bar. It's a single herb, sold as itself, which is rarer than you'd think in this industry. A lot of dried fruit gets treated with sulfur dioxide to keep the color bright and the shelf life long. This one skipped that step. Which means the color is a little duller and the fruit looks like it actually grew somewhere, instead of looking like it was designed in a lab to photograph well. That's not a flaw. That's just what a cornus berry looks like when you leave it alone.

What You're Actually Getting

Shan Zhu Yu has been used in traditional formulations for a long time, generally as a supporting herb rather than a headliner. In TCM practice it's associated with supporting healthy kidney and liver function, and with helping maintain the body's normal fluid balance. We're not going to tell you it fixes anything, because it's a dried berry, not a miracle, and also because the FDA has feelings about that kind of sentence. What we can say is that it's a well-established raw herb, sourced and processed the traditional way, meant to be used as part of a larger formula or decoction, the way herbalists have used it for centuries.

Why "Unsulfured" Is the Whole Point

  • No sulfur dioxide treatment, so the herb keeps its natural color variation, texture, and appearance instead of a uniform bleached look.
  • Processed and packaged to preserve the herb close to its traditional, minimally altered form.
  • Sold as a raw bulk herb, intended for practitioners and home use in traditional preparations, not as a pre-dosed capsule.
  • Part of the Plum Flower line from MayWay, a long-standing source for traditional Chinese herbs.

If you've used sulfured herbs before, side by side these look noticeably different. The sulfured stuff tends to be a cheerful, almost suspicious red-orange. This one looks like fruit that has been through some things, weather-wise. That's the tradeoff for skipping the preservative: less shine, more of the herb doing what the herb actually does.

How People Use It

Shan Zhu Yu is typically simmered as part of a decoction alongside other herbs, following the guidance of a qualified herbal practitioner or a traditional formula. It's not really a "grab a handful and go" kind of product. It supports overall daily wellness best when it's part of a properly balanced formula, prepared the way it's meant to be prepared, which admittedly takes more effort than swallowing a gummy. Nobody said tradition was fast.
