Zhi Zi Powder, Unsulfured (Gardenia Fruit) by MayWay / Plum Flower

Zhi Zi is gardenia fruit, ground to a powder, with nothing sulfured in to keep it "fresh." That's the whole pitch, and it's a good one. A lot of dried herbs get sulfured so they hold their color longer, which is a nice way of saying they get a chemical bath so they look prettier on a shelf. This one skipped that step. It's just gardenia. It looks like gardenia. It tastes like gardenia decided to become a powder, which, if you think about it, is a strange career move for a fruit, but here we are.

Plum Flower has been doing this a long time, sourcing and processing traditional Chinese botanicals the way herbalists have for centuries, minus the parts where things get modernized into something unrecognizable. Zhi Zi (Gardenia jasminoides) has a long history in that tradition, and this powder format makes it easy to work into formulas, teas, or however your practitioner or your own routine calls for it. No capsules to crack open, no tablets to crush. Just powder, doing what powder does, which is mostly just sitting there being powder until you use it.

What Zhi Zi Powder Supports

  • Supports a healthy inflammatory response
  • Promotes calm, balanced mood
  • Supports normal liver function as part of overall wellness
  • Contributes to healthy digestive comfort
  • Supports the body's natural cooling and balance, as understood in traditional herbal use

The "unsulfured" part matters more than it sounds like it should. Sulfur dioxide treatment is common in dried produce and herbs because it slows discoloration, but it also means you're getting a little bit of "not gardenia" mixed in with your gardenia. This batch is just the fruit, dried and powdered, the way it was before anyone thought to improve on it. Some things don't need improving. A rock doesn't need highlights.

Because it's a powder and not a capsule, dosing is flexible, and that flexibility is kind of the whole point if you're using it as part of a broader herbal formula. It plays well with other traditional botanicals, mixes into decoctions, and generally behaves the way an unadulterated herb powder should: predictably, quietly, without any surprises hiding in the ingredient list. There isn't an ingredient list. It's gardenia. That's the ingredient list.

Store it somewhere cool and dry, away from direct sunlight, the same way you'd store any dried botanical that doesn't have preservatives standing guard over it. It's a raw herb, not a science experiment, so treat it accordingly.
